Long story short I got myself a nice pair of new headphones. The Sennheiser HD 599s. I previously used the Sennheiser headset which came with a little 7.1 adapter, I loved it.

However the problem I'm having now is whether I should get myself a AMP/DAC specifically the FiiO - E10K or stick with 7.1 sound and go with the GSX 1000.

TLDR; What is better, AMP/DAC or 7.1 portable soundcard/amp. Which will give me a better sound experience?

I'm a gamer who loves movies and music.

Better? They are for entirely different things, the E10K is for music (Stereo) and the GSX1000 is for games (virtual surround)

E10K is certainly better value. Better amp and better DAC, but just stereo with no effects. For music, it's easily the better choice. For locating sounds when gaming, then surely you'd want the positional surround sound effect thing that a device like the GSX1000 provides?

GSX is over priced really given the quality of it's DAC and amp; however, for locating sounds when playing FPS games, it's very good indeed. Whether it's worth the £200 asking price comes down to the user.

A good option that sits between the two (price wise), is the Soundblaster G5 for about £130. It's an external device that has SBX for positional surround sound effects, a good headphone amp and a better DAC than the one in the GSX.

I've had the E10K for a while now - I think it's fantastic and I have no trouble picking up footsteps in games like CS:GO or BF1 (granted I've not tried the GSX, so I could be missing out!) it really depends on what you are expecting;
  • The E10K is stereo - if you're after a 'surround sound' experience then I would imagine the GSX or another equivalent would be more suitable.
  • There's obviously no microphone jack on the FiiO, so you'll need to factor that in also.

The gsx if gaming is priority.
The e10k if music is priority.

The e10 is probably the better value, but as above: it doesn't have a mic jack.

if you have 599s like me and GSX 1000 u dont need the mic port and you should use a modmic v5 and that comes with USB adapter which is better then the mic port in the GSX imo

i got the gsx 1000 but the sound seems to be very bad for me. when i disable all the options and leave 7.1 on it sounds echoey, why is that?

That's interesting, I didn't realise the Modmic came with a USB adapter - been thinking about getting one for a while because my Blue Snowball takes up so much desk space; that might have just swayed me!
