Loads of websites saying only to use water as a last resort, as the steam can cause issues and you can splash embers and hot ash about. I just closed it right up and waited for it to burn out which it did eventually. Still smoking a fraction when I open the door but looks to be out now. Will check in an hour.

As mentioned by a few people the best option was to starve the fire of oxygen. A wet towel would have been an option. Alternatively sand (but as most people don't have that at home then mud from the garden). It was a bit silly opening the door again without a towel/etc as it was clearly going to reignite it.

Damn, his actual house was on fire?! Oh wait, no it wasn't. It was a fire inside a stove which is self containing. OP was simply looking advice how best to put it out in case the wax from the candles caused problems at a later date.

Thanks for the advice chaps. Pleasing gamut of responses as per GD norm.

I did survive the night, wife has learnt her lesson and the house didn't burn down, so all worked out in the end.

It was quite fascinating how the wax burned, I was probably worrying about it too much really. Sand would have probably been the best solution had I had a bucket of it to hand.
