War crimes defendant takes poison during live trial

The reasoning behind the accommodation not being a rat-infested oubliette is because they have not been convicted yet, generally. They were held there before sentencing not after. Though frankly I see a small, bland room with a cramped desk and a narrow bed so I don't get all the comments about luxury. I think you could hang prisoners by their wrists and the same people would complain about the inmates getting a cushy life inside.

well it is rather relative - they get single rooms, TV, desk, computer etc.. Milosovich had more of an apartment set up with a separate office for his computer, fax machine internet access.. decent recreational facilities... basically the rooms vary from something akin to a student room in a halls of residence to a mini apartment

I'm not at all sad that this scumbag is dead, but he shouldn't be able to kill him self in court with poision. What if he'd threw whatever he had into someones face?

On the upside though he took two hours to die, so he didn't take a particularly quick route...

Potassium cyanide. Great when it acts quickly. Not so much fun when it doesn't.

Includes nasty convulsions at the end, just for the lulz.

Where are you getting this from?

Bosnian Croat war criminal Slobodan Praljak likely died from heart failure after swallowing potassium cyanide, Dutch prosecutors said Friday, two days after his dramatic courtroom suicide in front of UN judges.

“The preliminary results of the toxicological test showed that Mister Praljak had a concentration of potassium cyanide in his blood,” the Dutch prosecution said in a statement.

“This has resulted in a failure of the heart, which is pointed out as the suspected cause of death.”

It wouldn't have done anything. Potassium cyanide is only harmful when ingested, and it needs to reach the stomach for the necessary chemical reaction to occur because its toxicity is increased by acid. The higher the acidic content of the stomach, the more toxic the reaction and the faster it acts. Death typically occurs in a few minutes.
