New company car time....what to go for??

It doesn't specifically and I might get away with a 2016 if it's the right deal but generally they look for no more than 12 months old!
Sounds fair enough TBH. I've been warned my next car is likely to be "whatever is going cheap at auction" so I've expressed a strong preference to an allowance!

Well I went to have a look around one of these car supermarkets yesterday with the following results:

Volvo V40 and Mercedes A-Class - felt too small. (I'm 6'3" so meed loads of leg room and the back seats need to be able to fit 2 kids car seats!)

Quite liked the look of the Skoda Octavia and Superb, Mazda 6 and Nissan Qashqai though!

can get a brand new mazda 6 at around your budget

As title I've been informed by work that the time has come to chop in my 2014 plate Mondeo for something a bit newer!

Max budget is £16k

Are you sure you can get something credibly better than a 3 year old Mondeo for 16k?

I'm not sure you can really?

£16k will easily get you behind the wheel of a decent f10 - indeed an AUC example - am I right to assume therefore you deem a 3year old Mondeo better than said f10?

I’m assuming, of course, that his work deem “better” by what year a car is, regardless of what it is....

Disregarding the above, there’s plenty for £16k that’s way better than said Mondeo to my eyes....

Edit, ignore, I’ve just read their requirements - less than 12 months old ideally- what a daft requirement in this day and age!

Shame as there are actually some nice 520d for that price
Yeah, just thought about it and read back a bit further in the thread...

A requirement drafted by someone who’s clueless about the current car market!

Shame, a 520d would be perfect.

There are plenty of cars in this budget including new and I suspect the company has set this budget based on the Astra end of the market. Whilst boring it is functional.

The 1 year age criteria will be to mitigate risk of maintenance out of warranty etc plus probably form part of their accounting and asset purchase / depreciation policies.

Obviously any F10 is a far better car and my old one was sold as an AUC for smack on budget but it was almost 7 years old not a year old...

Exactly, they're aiming to provide a collection of new looking cars with the first year depreciation hit gone but still in warranty to minimise repair costs.

This reasoning has always been my understanding!

Quite like the look of another Octavia to be honest - there is a 17-plate with a very good spec within budget and I loved my last one - the only downside is that I've had one before and quite fancied trying something different!

In your budget, there isn't really much better. Worth having a look on broadspeed for a quick indicator on new car discounts and carwow for some actual dealer pricing.

The 1.5 TSI SE 150PS looks to be available new sub 16k.

Having looked at broadspeed and carwow recently for the vRS versions, broadspeed was bettering carwow quotes by several thousand.
