What are you cooking for Xmas ??

Xmas is a time we go all out and try different ideas so it would be nice to see what others are thinking

For me im still thinking and planning yet

a few things are a must have for me.

Roast chicken (turkey is nice but dry),
Crispy fluffy Roast potatoes
Yorkshires puddings

Plans may change.

whelp I'll be visiting the partners mother for christmas again, yet again expected to stay the night at some unfurnished apartment we have to rent for 150 francs when we only sleep in it for the night... when we could just get a train home and return again the following morning for cheaper...
I think last christmas it was 2 types of soups with home made breadsticks and some goulash thing with steak in it.

Swiss christmas food is pretty crappy it seems...

Going to be making a Beef Wellington and a Sea Bass En Croute for the mains. Got 3 meat eaters and a pescatarian coming! Was going to do a mushroom wellington, but think the sea bass will be more of a treat...

Standard trimmings!

My mother will bring starters, likely be smoked salmon and some pates.

Christmas Pudding.
HUGE cheeseboard.

Rib of beef with all the trimmings as per usual, we make an absolutely cracking Christmas dinner. Best meal of the year, can’t wait!

Already had a beef roast for one Christmas dinner this year. Got a crown to cook at my Mum's, then for Christmas Day itself (just me and the other half) we'll be doing either a rib of beef or I might try a wellngton if I'm feeling adventurous :o

What's everyone doing for starters?

Couple of beers with some of the family from 12pm-2pm down the pub like every year then onto dinner!

I did a rib of beef For father's day which seemed to go down really well so considering the same. Or maybe do that Christmas Eve, but I don't know how to go about 'alternative' sides to a roast beef to be different to Christmas day (turkey).

Not sure about starter. Might make it easy and buy in pate. Cornichons, Melba toast. Pretty easy.
Then again I fancy doing something better. We don't have much fish at christmas so maybe seafood. Prawn cocktail is a little retro, I could go scallops again (did that at father's day too) cerviche might be a bit different.

Hmm.

Rolled fore rib of beef. Usual trimmings. If I can find an inexpensive bottle of madeira wine I'll use that in my gravy. Not sure about the rest I may not be too fancy this year. Big plan will be for more pre-preparation so I can enjoy the day more.

Never have been big on roast dinners so the traditional xmas staples have never appealed to me yet we always did them just because.

This year I am seriously considering just having a feast of pizza and curry followed by copious amounts of chocolate before most likely ejecting it back out once I have my first go in VR. Can't wait! :D

Bronze Turkey from here. We had Wild Boar last year, Goose in 2015, Forerib of Beef in 2014, and Duck in 2013. We get loads of seafood for starters (mahussive Tiger Prornz, Smoked Salmon, and and Oysters). We never have trad pud cos the missus hates dried fruit.

Is it possible to make much gravy when cooking a crown? I'm a dab hand when roasting a whole chicken, but not sure about a turkey. Do you get much juice from a crown? I'm guessing not.

Nothing... going to my brother in law's, with his mrs and her family cooking. I was looking forward to it until I found out it'll be 10 adults there, none of whom I know other than her and my brother in law. That and I can't have any say as to the goings on in the kitchen. I'm going to really struggle. Either that or get **** faced. I sense both.

lol ohhh this is why Christmas is so fun.

1 - Girlfriend and I are going to my Mum's to cook this weekend.
2 - Girlfriend and I want free-range turkey. It's Christmas, we want to do things right.
3 - Tell Mum we'll book the online shop, everything but the turkey.
4 - Ask Mum to order free-range crown from her local butchers.
5 - Mum comes back and says she's ordered it, it's £20.
6 - We're not convinced that's free range (too cheap), ask Mum. She says "Oh it's a good quality one, but not organic as that was like £50".
7 - Girlfriend rings butchers today to ask what my Mum has ordered, it's a bog-standard barn turkey. Yuck.
8 - Butcher can't/won't do a crown less than 2kg, at £20/kg, will ask his supplier for something smaller.
9 - Girlfriend calls back later to see what's happened. He's ordered us a 1.5kg breast. Not a crown. Er, ok :o

So now I have a ****ed off girlfriend because he's gone to all this trouble and faff when my Mum wouldn't pay for free range, and now I'm going to have to explain to my Mum that we called the butcher and changed the order because we're liberal metropolitan elite Guardianistas and won't eat anything unless it's free range and that's why has to spend £30 more than she wanted :p  :( Sigh..

In other news, I'm quite looking forward to doing that Serious Eats turkey roll thing :D
