Oxford student who stabbed boyfriend is spared jail

As a few others have said she can appeal the sentence only.
The Court of Appeal cannot increase her sentence, so in a sense she has nothing to lose, except the costs of the appeal.
She wants a non custodial sentence, (Community order), because it will be easier for her to then continue her studies and eventually to become a doctor, as a non custodial sentence is a) spent more quickly and terefore does not need to be declared for as long, and b) will doubtless be looked at by the GMC as less serious.

There is a very good article here which explains that her sentence was not unusually low, and that the judge applied the guidelines as one would expect him to do.

What concerns me more is that a young lady with her issues and admitted history of substance abuse will apparently be allowed to practise medicine.

oh, I thought that would at least be a risk here... that is a bit ridiculous - if you've got the money (which her family clearly does) then it is a no brainer... as far as the sentence is concerned she's got a free roll of the dice to try and get it reduced??? I guess financially it makes sense too as it is a potential medical career on the line here

If she was serving a sentence the court of Appeal could make a loss of time order, so that some of the time already served would not count. This only happens if you apply for leave to appeal, get refused leave, but go ahead anyway. Few people who do not go straight to prison feel the need to appeal their sentence.

Clear or not, I can't imagine many people would want to hire her.

You're kidding? She's an equality wet dream! Pretty female who has overcome mental problems and turned her life around from a criminal background. So many boxes to tick. So many!

Young, attractive, apparently charismatic, has connections, wealthy family, educated at what is considered the top institute of higher education. She may not be hired as a carer for elderly people due to her criminal record but i am sure she can walk into quite a few jobs if she cant continue pursuing her education as a heart surgeon.

Having a record can be a huge wall for almost everyone but i imagine it is more of a speed bump for someone in her position.

Pleased about this to be honest. It's an interesting one, the judge when sentencing described her as genuinely remorseful, and her actions when out on licence seem to suggest that she's taken great steps to get past the incident and improve herself. Having said that, appealing what most people would describe as quite a lenient sentence doesn't seem remorseful at all, and whilst I appreciate her future has been impacted by this sometimes you need to take responsibility and deal with the consequences, trying to appeal to attain a non-custodial sentence reeks of entitlement to me.

I have some empathy as there are no winners in this case really but it does leave a sour taste in the mouth that she even considered the appeal, especially if there is a cost to the tax payer in hearing the case (I assume there is).

Apparently shes posed nude for some LGBT student mag according to some tabloid rag i picked up on the train this morning, but this is whats going to effect her employment chances?

Really don't understand this at all.

She must know that the whole country thinks shes be let off lightly so unless she really thinks shes innocent then why would she appeal. Not knowing all the details does make me think that maybe the press aren't focusing on all the story just the shocking parts to sell papers.

Can't see why everyone is swooning over her, shes just some generic looking European.

(and she has pointy elbows)

Could be arrogance - maybe either pathological or used to getting away with things due to upbringing and thinks the normal rules don't apply to her.
