Denon AVR-X2400H dead

Just looking for some general advice, I bought this receiver during black Friday. Functionally it's worked great up till today and now after turning it on the power led starts blinking red, I've tried disconnecting everything and leaving it for a while but its behaviour hasn't changed.

So my question is do you think I should return it for a new replacement or look towards a different model? I'm using Kef reference two two speakers which (afaik) shouldn't have been a problem for this unit but it crapping out like this makes me a little worried replacing it with the same model will just have it crapping out again at a later date when I'll have less options.
 
I have the exact same speakers, they are 4 Ohm but drop down to 2.2ohm. Power for this amp in 2 channel mode is 95W. With AVR's with uncertain power outputs, I go by the lowest figure given, at best that is 95W so in 7 channel driven, it'll be less than that. By how much? No idea. But I believe Denon, Marantz, Pioneer are pretty good with actual power output figures.

Can't see any Sound & Vision bench tests for this model.

FYI I've been using a Audiolab 8000PX poweramps, in single and biamp mode, then ATI 2000 series (3 channel model) for these speakers. They need a amp with a decent power supply. They're efficient, but they are quite hard to drive with their low impedence.

Bugger, that's what I was worried about.

Assuming that the AVR-X2400H doesn't have enough power to safely drive the speakers the next model up is only rated at 10w per channel more so I'd guess I'll have the same problem and that unit is nearly double the cost. I'm not replacing the speakers as I like them too much.

So either I need a different brand of AV receiver or I need a power amp, neither of which I really wanted as I liked the convenience of one unit not to mention I was supposed to save money going down this route. Any recommendations?
 
assuming it's the speakers, though i doubt it is, then you need something that's stable at low impedance loads. It's not really about power, but that sort of thing normally comes with amps that are big and powerful. And where AV is concerned, that means £££.

That said, I dont think the speakers are the cause of the amp shutting down and blinking leds without anything connected. If the speakers were an issue, id expect it to happen when you turn the wick up and i'd expect the amp to behave itself and restart after you've pulled the plug from the wall.

In other words, i think you've just been unlucky, and i'd be sending the amp back for a replacement. Then again personally if i had a pair of 2.2's, I'd be wanting something a lot more beefy than that denon driving them.

You dont really need one. Max consumption is 500w. Draw when turned on with no sound ('eco' mode off) is 75w. That leaves 500w-75w=425w for the amplification. 425w/7 channels = 60.7w, factor in the efficiency of the amp and if it's a class D then it'll be 85-90 probably or if it's AB then...50%? it's gonna be 50w all channel driven or less at the most, and that wont be 0.1% distortion either.

Yeah unlikely to die like that unless it got very hot, and should last more than a week.

As said not power but PSU.

As for poweramp if side and rears are easier load could get a three channel amp for LCR. Assume you're busing the matching Kef mode 200 reference? That is ohm 4 ohm too.

Emotive are good price or xpa-3 but need to import them.

Fyi though brother went from 60w amps to 100w and noticed improvement.

The amps I'm using now are 300w into 4ohm all channel driven used for whole with Kef 2.2

As for saving money... Bit once you get into higher end speakers, check out AV pre amps like lexicon mc-12hd when it came out...cheaper options now marantz av7703 at £1300.

That's with 8 ohm speakers though, who knows what happens with three, or more 4ohm speakers connected.

If it runs into distortion blow treble drivers, you don't want that as they're no longer available. If load too much , over heat, run into high thd as PSU not capable, and power plummets.

For Kef ref I'd be looking at higher than denon 2000 series. Proably 4000 series?

Never been impressed with avrs theyre ok for low to midrange area, once you go over certain budget ie flagship avr " 100w" per channel models go for poweramp spend money on that they are better than any flagship avr, and you keep them for 20 years. You won't keep keeping acts for 20 years.

I wouldn't expect much to happen. The denon is rated to drive 4ohm speakers and it has a current-limiting 4ohm mode so it shouldnt be falling over trying to drive any 4ohm rated speakers. Of course if the AVR wasnt set to 4ohm then that might be a problem...

You won't keep keeping acts for 20 years.

My Onkyo's 10 years old - I'm half way there :) Although i did have to repair the display board the other day.....
 
If it lacks hdmi, HD audio decoding, room correction, 4k, audio streaming, network control, Bluetooth or other wireless transmitter... its getting close to replacing my non hdmi AV pre. Legacy audio are being phased out replaced with hdmi. Avrs do date and depreciate. And most important if you have decent speakers and hard to drive maybe avr not the best to power them, not sounding their best, and if you do blow driver(s) then very expensive or you junk your speakers. If avr blew my celestion A3 that's it :( unless buy another pair to salvage and get one pair going. Brother blew couple of treble drivers, I blew one with budget avr. So for myself rather spend £500 on a good 2 channel power amp knowing clean power than risk it and do damage to speaker cost of new speakers £1000-£2000 including matching center.

I'm just using two channels at the moment, never got around to wall mounting the TV so the Kef 200 has been sitting in a box for many years (paid full whack for it when it was new too).

Perhaps a Denon AVR-X3400H or Marantz SR6012 and wait for the right power amp to pop up cheaply somewhere?
 
Why would you not use the Kef 200 it's a great speaker, used one myself for few years still have it. If you have problem with TV + center off the wall gave some combination TV vesa stand and center speaker units.

I will I will... I've had a busy few years and the home cinema was never a priority for my time.

That's why I got the Denon, it was supposed to be a nice simple replacement, whoops. :p
 
All depends

If you have hard to drive speakers
Want it loud
Depending which avr you have
Whether you want to go AV pre power or avr plus poweamps. Or avr plus poweramp now then later another poweramp replace avr with pre
Whether you want a 2 plus avr, 3 plus avr, uptown 7,9, 11 ie atmos

For myself I had back avr
Then added a stereo integrated amp.
Replaced avr with Yamaha DSP 3 channel add on avr
Then added a power amp for center biamp
Then another for sides
Then another for rears
Got avr pre here to totally split integrated an AV side
Then another to biamp left right
Thought 5 amps was getting a bit stupid, amps getting on a bit, sold a couple moved rest to hifi biamp those, bought a 3 channel then 4 channel for 7 channel system for stereo or mono movies just have the 3ch on, for mono get LCR mono mix which is great, then fir modern movies switch the 4ch on

Still have couple of the 2ch amps spare 60w per channel so those are ideal for atmos.

LCR are 4ohm either Kef ref or celestion a series so the 200w amp worth while, ideal/rears sleazy load.

Really depends on your plans now and in the future.

You may be happy now with avr + 3 channel but you may want AV pre. But at least with some brands can get custom amp channels.
