Boy, 15, admits causing crash in which five people died

Eh?

When friends and relatives die it's not the time or place to talk trash to people or organisations that seek to broadcast it. They aren't your friends, far from it.

Here we are ogling over it looking for deep meaningful personal exposure of weakness but generally people don't want to share. They're selfish like that.

So we're left speculating and hoping that a sufficiently incisive interviewer can get through their guard.

what they hell were the 24 yrs olds doing in the car?

B@

Drugs? No great loss to the UK population, burdens on the taxpayer in the making. At least they managed to just top themselves, and not other road users.

My sympathy goes to the poor sod who had their car nicked and destroyed.

Hello Mr Tree, Meet Mr Darwin.

Trees ALWAYS win

They've probably done this mullarky numerous times. It's very fortunate they didn't cream anyone on their way to their demise.

very dark story hes going to have a long life with regrets

Doubt it, people who do things like this always try to find somebody else to blame when it all goes horribly wrong. (You know, Its the polices fault I ran over those people while trying to escape, they shouldn't have been chasing me etc, etc)

Give it six months and he and the other relatives will be trying to sue the local authority for not having a crash barrier round the tree. :(

Having spent time in jail and speaking to people who have commit crimes as such i would have to disagree, guilt is a very powerful thing and what people may act like on the outside isnt reflected what they feel

Like Jon Venables perhaps? Is he inwardly repentant, contrite and humbled, although outwardly still a serious serial offender, showing no remorse or apology...? I'm afraid it's the actions of these people that affect the rest of us, not their inner emotional grappling.

Sad but no real sympathy.
At least no one uninvolved died.

Not good thing but one of those things in life where you have to live with the consequences.

I guess but how much can you take from a guy like that

Lifelong driving ban would be a fair punishment. Caught driving? Back inside you go.

Anecdotal I know. But have been told by a Lawyer I know that Legal academics are generally uncomfortable with the idea of lengthy driving bans as a punishment. Basically because in many cases, sheer economic necessity results in people breaking the ban and, even if they hadn't done anything else wrong, thus ending up in a legal spiral of destruction that is difficult to recover from.

Now, I think I have made myself reasonably clear that, for wider society anyway, a better outcome would have been for him not to have survived. But given that he has we really have two options. Either lock him up for the rest of his days or consider the possibility that some sort of reformation is possible and that he might yet become a worthwhile member of society (My own opinion is that this is about as likely as ET joining me for Christmas dinner, but that's not the point)

If we are going to consider reformation as an option, then the light at the end of that particular tunnel for him is that he might, one day, be able to live life just like everybody else. And yes, that does include the ability to operate a vehicle as long as he is medically fit and technically competent to do so.

(There are cases where I would consider lifetime driving bans, I might for instance consider them appropriate for sex offenders, but the motivation for the ban here is more than just punishment)

I can think of plenty of appropriate punishments for this case, but a lifetime driving ban is probably not one of them...
