To be fair to him, although religion has had a huge impact on the development of society, is the foundation of Western civilisation and is not only about the supernatural but also has had a significant influence in bringing together people under shared culture, traditions and celebrations and has also done a lot of good it is the 'in' thing to blame everything on religion and pretend that we'd be superior beings living in complete peace and harmony without it.
A belief in one or more supernatural beings goes back to the earliest days of mankind when an explanation for natural disasters (floods, drought, crop failure, etc.) was sought.
Charlatans then exploited these primitive beliefs to their advantage by claiming to be able to "manage" the Gods with sacrifices of goats, cows, virgins, etc.
This then progressed on to the divine right of Kings and an exploitative theory propagated by the Church that no matter how awful your life as a starving peasant on Earth was, by behaving yourself, by praying and financing the clergy you would reap the justified rewards in Heaven.
As to western civilisation, religion put a great deal of effort into manipulating science; was responsible for the Crusades, causing conflict and bloodshed between Catholics and Protestants for centuries, the Holocaust, Homophobia, the denigration of apple fancying, snake loving women, etc., etc.
No doubt religion around the world has done some good in the past. However, it has also done a great deal of harm and Western and other Civilisations should have moved on to some better reason for behaving fairly for the benefit of mankind than an irrational belief in some all-powerful, all-seeing, infallible, vengeful imaginary superbeing.
Get rid of the protection of religion now - you know it makes sense!
