Hi guys

I'm trying to tide up my living room and have 2 phone sockets, a cable box and some old Sky coax cables which are disconnected and i don't use or want. I'm going to remove the cables & boxes from the interior and exterior walls, but how do i fill the holes through the wall the missing cables will leave?

Can i just cover over the entrance to the exterior hole with sillicon sealant or do i need to fill the hole itself?

Its a brick wall on your standard Victorian terrace.

Thanks

Just plug the holes with sealant on each side. You will need to go all the way through the bricks to prevent your sealant plugs getting pushed out by water freezing. Don't leave holes unless you want bees, wasps, ants, etc inside the wall.

For the exterior I either use sealant or external grade filler that won't crack/shrink for slightly larger holes. However I also mix in a little acrylic colour I've bought that's a good match to the brick. The acrylic paint last years in the tube unlike coloured sealants/fillers. A bit fussy but gives a great finish and colour that doesn't wear off.

For the interior any applicable decorating filler so it can be sanded smooth.

In both cases I use disposable dispensing syringes which makes it a doddle to fill well without making a mess (I did mention I am fussy :))

Thanks guys, i'll just get some exterior silicon sealant then.

On my house i have a white Cable & Wireless box with feeds coming up from the ground into the white box. This goes into my house as a coax and phone cable.

What i want to do is remove the old Cable & Wireless kit on the inside as it's on a wall i want an inbuilt cupboard put into, and remove all the external junk and use the existing hole for a new cable from a standard TV aerial i'll get installed.

Can i just get some wire cutters and cut anything into the external white box, pull it all out and put my new cable through? C&W haven't existing for what, 15 years? I'll never want cable TV and i doubt this connection even works, it's probably analogue? Any concerns with voltage etc?

Cheers

Yep as above, wouldn't dream of using silicon sealer personally, I think it will look naff. I'd use mortar for the outside brick work, and internal filler for the inside plaster or plaster board. Each to their own of course.

If you really want it to match your brick, if you have a spare bit of brick then you can break/crush/hammer it up into bits, use silicone sealant or mortar and then give it a coating of the brick bits to blend it in.

I suppose the issue with mortar is if you don't already have sand and cement lying around then you're buying a bag of each to mix up the tiniest little portion.

Yeah i have some brick pieces to crush and mix in. The largest holes are on the plinth though and that's painted white so sealant should look ok.

I'm more worried about whether i can just chop off the incoming cable bits to tidy it all up.

I removed a satellite dish where the cabling had simply been shoved through a hole in the wall with no termination or faceplate etc. I sealed the outside with silicon sealant and the inside with Polyfilla before the whole wall was replastered. I'll check the outside to see whether the silicon is still sound!
