Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Anyone on VIVID 350 can you advise on what download speeds you are getting please (just a big file like itunes). I seem to max out at about 10-12 mb/s which by my reckoning does not correspond to the 380 mbits/s on the speedtest. On Sky at 80/20 I get 8 mb/s downloads...so I should be getting about 35 mb/s downloads on 350/20.

Are you speed testing multiple or single connection download speeds? If using say speedtest.net then that uses many so test using thinkbroadband.com (shows 1 and 6), speedof.me (uses 1) or dslreports.com (last one must be set to use 1 not the default 6 connections for download testing in its options).

It's not uncommon for VM connections to be much slower on a single connection than using multiple and this affects downloads where only a single connection can/is used (a lot of video streaming, most downloads with out a special download tool etc).

Sounds like you're stuck on 100 Mbit somewhere. I presume this is wired? What speed is the OS reporting the network is connected at?

Definitely wired, 1000 mbit connection.

That seems low, On Steam + other platforms my 350 connection hits 46/47 mb/s when it get's going on big files.

I think I need to uninstall a game and download it again to try it out!

Yes I have heard on the VM forums that a single connection is limited to 50 mbits/s. speedtest shows 380 mbits/s - I shall try the others out and report back! Thanks!

Got my install tomorrow... any words of wisdom before the event?

Make it clear how you want everything installed, we had multiroom installed upstairs about 8 years ago and wasn't the best install. He used the carpet grip to hold the cable into place, 6x 2 way splitters to link 3 bedrooms not to mention 1 of the splitters installed behind the bedroom door (not fastened down) so whenever you opened the door it would knock the splitter causing the TV's upstairs to glitch.

I think the installer was sub contracted by VM, VM sent 1 of there "chief" engineer's out who said it was 1 of the worst jobs he had seen for a while.

Is it separates lines for internet and broadband? Will the install the connections in different places?

I suspect that I may have to provide assistance by venturing into the underfloor crawl space to ensure that I get the install that I want.

It's one line that goes to a box outside your house. You can have it split there with cables on the outside and go into your house to boxes on the inside, where it can be split further (or not) before going into the Superhub/Tivo.

They won't lift floorboards or go into attics, but they don't mind you doing it for them. My guy just gave me a big length of cable that I threaded under the floorboard (through joists I'd pre-drilled) and down some boxing and through a wall. Once that was done, he terminated the ends, made the necessary joints, and I put the floorboards back down.

Areas can be huge and congestion can be at various levels right down to the cabinet. The best bet is searching the VM forums for post codes/towns and asking people in the same road.

You are correct,of course.

There was a fella frequenting these forums about a year ago living in High Cross ,Newport,S Wales,I wonder if he's still about...

So VM turned up yesterday, albeit 10 minutes after the end of the slot they gave me.

Installed to my "Network Closet" under the stairs as requested.

Download: 383Mbps
Upload: 21Mbps

Need to get my Ubiquiti kit installed now and see how it all performs

And it shows 1Gb connection speed in networks?

As much as it can do...

Have you tried a steam download to test speeds?

Steam downloads at about 4-5mb/s. Single downloads from Apple / Microsoft / gamer shell are at about 2 mb/s?? Torrents don’t go above 1.5mb/s.

Although NordVPN is now speed testing at about 300/20.

All the speed tests are reporting a speed of around 380/20 even in single thread tests.

Do you have another PC/Laptop to test and eliminate the PC?
