Virgin Media Discussion Thread

So I have resorted to a 3 device solution!

VM Superhub 3 - modem mode
Asus N66U - router mode with wifi switched off
BT smart hub - wireless AP mode

This means I am getting excellent wired performance (from the ASUS) and wifi is hitting 300 mbps upstairs thanks to the 802.11ac on the smart hub!

Do you have instructions for getting the smart hub in AP mode with a Superhub3? I know there is a thread or two floating around but I didn't have much luck (admittedly I gave up quickly)

Hey guys, my bills are horribly expensive now and getting unaffordable. £41 now for just internet, I don't have any packages, no landline or virgin tv. It's been increasing quite regularly and quite fast and doesn't seem that long ago when it was still around £25. I don't see them stopping and I've no doubt they'll increase it again soon. It's all very well they keep telling me how fast my internet is getting which is about 170mb/s but it would be fast enough for me even if they reduced it. I don't need any more speed.

A year or two ago I threatened them that I'd leave and I got a call from a very nice woman who reduced it considerably for quite a few months before it went back up. Do you think I should cal them again and threaten to leave?
I'm paying about £39 odd for 150MB which seems a lot to me, they are doing 100MB for £32 (12 months then goes up) so did a web chat and said I've been out of contract for 2-3 years, what could they do? They offered nothing and just kept quoting the web prices - not even the new customer price either. Looks like I will look around and then leave or be prepared to and consider staying if they offer something better.

I've got 100Mb, XL TV and phone for £44.

Find a competitors deal you would be happy with, phone up virgin and cancel qouting the deal ... And they cave :)

You need to put your 30 days cancellation notice in, then someone will call you to offer something better.

I was paying £17 per month last year for 50mb, but this was to rise to 34.

They added line rental on and somehow this works out cheaper at £23 per month for 50mb and talk weekends. It's still a price rise, but looking around I can't get any better with another isp.

So I contacted VM about my package.

Currently on Limited Edition Full House Movies - that was £55 p/m on a 12 month contract, that ended to £83.

Rang them up, spoke to someone called Andrew. He matched me this http://www.virginmedia.com/shop/bundles/full-house-movies-bundle.html and sending me out the V6 free of charge!

Happy with that, considering my alternatives would have been worse as I can only can get 15Mbps FTTC.

The V6 box is great, my parents just had it to replace their old V+ box. Their other box is a Tivo which is incredibly slow, barely usable.

We've just changed from a Tivo box to the V6 and I have to agree, it's so much more responsive. We'll probably use some of the additional features now, as before we just got fed up of waiting for the iPlayer or catch up interfaces to load and ended up settling for whatever was on live TV.
The bluetooth remote will come in handy too, as I can now just use a HDMI splitter to send the feed to a TV in our bedroom and control the V6 box from there, rather than have to mess with IR extenders or whatever.

I am using a ubiquiti UniFi AP and I have to say it is the single best piece quipment I have bought. I have a pretty big 4 bedroom house and the range has been exceptional. Router/SH3 is downstairs with WiFi turned off. I have the AP upstairs and it provides fantastic WiFi around the house and outside in the garden too. Never had any WiFi dropouts since.
How do you set it up? (Can you explain in layman terms?)

Do you just plug in an ethernet cable connected to the router and power supply? Does it do all the set up for you?
Will I still connect to the same SSID or will I have to connect to another one?

Does anybody remember the name of the kind member and Virgin employee in this thread that offered help with new customer deals?

We want to upgrade to the TV6 and 200BB but that comes with a HUB3 which Ive heard has some issues so I am but unsure on upgrading at present.

VM were down here off & on most all of yesterday. Considering the gubbins is mostly underground I can't figure out why they're so unreliable.
Furthermore they also have an amazing gift of breaking down right at a time you're desperate to use the tin'ternet

i had my house CAT6 cabled externally to a point in the middle of my house upstairs (a walk in wardrobe); here i have my CCTV, NVR and patch panel/switch located.

I plug the PoE power injector into the plug socket - this also has 2 Rj45 ports - one plugs into the switch (or router if you are connected directly into it) and the other into the Ubiquiti Access Point. It is very simple. I then logged into my SH3 and disabled wireless.

To set up the Unifi i just downloaded the app onto my phone and changed the SSID details there and havent really needed to look at it since as it has been working perfectly for months now

Anyone on VIVID 350 can you advise on what download speeds you are getting please (just a big file like itunes). I seem to max out at about 10-12 mb/s which by my reckoning does not correspond to the 380 mbits/s on the speedtest. On Sky at 80/20 I get 8 mb/s downloads...so I should be getting about 35 mb/s downloads on 350/20.

That seems low, On Steam + other platforms my 350 connection hits 46/47 mb/s when it get's going on big files.
