Hi all

Just listening to my mother-in-law on the phone talking to her sister about petty crime and how the culprit was someone who 'shouldn't even be here' and how they should ALL be 'shipped back to their own country' and it made me wonder what makes her claim to live here any more or less valid than someone who was born and raised in another country? It also made me wonder, what does she think we should do with criminals who were born and raised in this country. Ship them out somewhere too? Where to?

I admit that I really struggle to understand what it is that people with this mentality actually want to happen. They seem to want to ship all the foreign people out but then I'm really not sure what they are expecting to happen after that. Do they truly believe that if you get rid of foreign people we'll suddenly have a utopian society where there's no crime, no benefit-scroungers, no housing crisis and the NHS works perfectly with no waiting lists or problems getting an appointment with a GP?

Help me to understand this mentality!

So you think you should be able to go anyway and live there?

Britain has gone through a very rapid change in the last 30 years. Enough for her to notice. Big cities like London and Birmingham have gone from being majority white to minority white in a relative short space of time.

Green grocers and florists have closed down and kebab shops have taken their place, churches close and mosques open instead. Some people see this pace of change and they don't like it. It makes them fearful of the future.

Then when the immigrant population commit crimes it just reinforces their opinions.

Nostalgia for how life used to be (sense of community / belonging that has been lost in modern times, certain groups are less well off due to migration).

Also there will be a xenophobic element, she probably doesn't know many minority people and those that she does know being 'alright'.

OK so it's possibly just a fear of change? I grew up in the late 80s/early 90s and I went to a primary school with people from all sorts of cultures, so I'm used to that kind of mix of people.

The ironic thing is she doesn't go anywhere and doesn't do anything, so if she's feeling a sense of a loss of community/belonging, it's entirely her own doing by withdrawing from society.

Yes she has definitely spoken about how nice and hard working the local shop-keepers are (muslims or hindus, not sure) but in the next breath she would ship them all back!

Personally I think anyone of Irish, Scottish (Inc me), Welsh, French, Germanic or Nordic heritage should be packed off back where they belong. Can you imagine how peaceful England's green and pleasant lands would be?

Yea. If you've been exposed to people of different backgrounds then you'll be much more tolerant of it. Fear is a big motivator for people, it is one of the key drivers in fact, people say and do all sorts of things when they are afraid.

I'm in my mid 30s and I do think that the demographics of this country have changed very quickly. I'm not suggesting that's a good or bad thing but I can understand why people who haven't spent most of their life with different people might see these changes and be afraid of them.

I really don’t think it’s hard to understand why people feel that way. If someone comes here and then is constantly talking down the way of life here or breaking the laws here, then yes a valid question would be why are you here?

As for your mother in law saying send them ALL back... well she’s probably been reading the daily mail and think they’re all the same I suppose.

As for the people born here thing. Well if they’re a British citizen and they commit crime on British soil it’s no ones responsibility except Britain’s. If someone is here legally and commits crime on British soil it’s still our responsibility. If they’re here illegally and commit crime in Britain then I can understand the feeling of send them back.

As always tarring everyone with the same brush is stupid. I can see how “send someone back” is a valid stance in certain cases, far from the majority though.

The reason there is less "green grocers and florists" is nothing to do with immigrants, and all because of the rapid growth and extreme convenience of the supermarkets.

Same with churches really. Our migrant population are the ones going to church and mosques. Ironically the COE is mainly being kept stable by the black community now and the migrants that come here tend to be more religious than our white Anglo Saxon population.

I'm not suggesting that kebab shops have directly replaced the greengrocers.

It's just the changing face of the country. These are forces that are out of her control and she doesn't like it. The green grocers closed because of the supermarket that SHE most likely prefers to go to.

Personally I leave these people to wallow in their own misery.

There's a difference between having completely open borders and having the entire world turn up though!

Undoubtedly, it just makes me laugh when you hear these things as we actually have stricter immigration rules now than those 'halcyon times' people hark on about

the thing that gets me about the "send em back home" mentality seems to only apply to aisa, the middle east, eastern europe and africa.

you never hear that kind of criticism being leveled at anyone from the major european countries (france, germany, spain, etc) or americans (unless they're mistaking an african-american for african)
