This is slightly worrying, OK they're just the junior partner in the coalition but this is currently the only European country to have a far right party in power

Thousands of protesters rallied in central Vienna against Austria's new coalition government of conservatives and far right, during its swearing-in.

Among the banners were ones saying "Don't let the Nazis govern".

I think in this instance the protestors are at least getting a bit closer to the truth than they usually are when labelling people "Nazis". Apparently this party claims that "Islam has no place in Austria”. So far they've proposed slashing asylum seeker benefits and rejected the EU's migrant quotas...

As stated, they are a minority coalition party. Doubtful any of their extreme reforms will get passed. Coalitions are infamous for their impotence. I'm not worried.

They have influence still, don't forget that their coalition partners are conservatives and see the changes already being proposed by the new govt.

This isnt a shock for Austria, they had a far right party in power in the early 2000's, oh and what makes them bad people exactly, if that is what posters are getting at.

"Islam has no place in Austria”

Seems a tad extreme, while I'm no fan of religion to claim that one religion has no place is rather dubious within a country that is supposed to have freedom of religion.

Good thing we are leaving the EU if they sanction the rights of a democratically elected coalition to impose laws that are not to their liking. So sanctions against Hungary and Poland, Austria and possibly other member countries.... Sounds workable.... ;) As I have long said the EU is in its self inflicted death throws. How's Merkel's attempts at forming a workable coalition going? The BBC seem remarkably quiet about her problems with large swathes of Germany's populace getting twitchy about unfettered hoards of immigrants lying their way into their country.

Here we go again...........

Mods really need to get a grip on these threads now. This shouldn't be what GD is for.

What should it be for?

Personally I am more concerned about political parties with Marxists as their finance ministers getting into power of the back of (what I beleive to be misguided) far higher public support than the European 'right' parties who generally have far less public support.

But the 'left' has always had far more excuses made for it when its ideas go bad and kill millions...

Back on topic its strange that some people tolerate hard left agitators saying 'no place for nazi' s' (with a very fast and loose definition of what actually qualifies a person as a nazi) with the insinuation or actual use of violence to back it up but when it comes to religions with arguably far more abhorrent beliefs openly stated in their texts some people suddenly get all precious and call it racism or some made up phobia to suggest that such beliefs are or at least should be incompatible with existing laws and values.

Why are you worried? Are you expecting to hear the sound of jack boots marching across europe and Auschvitz and Belson to be reopened anytime soon?

This isn't what GD is for, it is for the pursuit of truth in science, such as discovering the mysteries behind spontaneous human combustion. Sometimes it isn't about the pursuit of information but to have a moan about the stupidity of retailers when selling habby birtdoi candles.
