What's happened to tablets ?

my virgin telly tablet arrived yesterday and i absolutely love it . remote play from ps4 and xbox working and im finding the screen size superb. kids keep nicking it though and they love it . Really pleased with the hundred pounds i paid for it and watching films on it is fantastic makes my ipad seem like a toy

Almost pointless having a tablet for the masses with the takeover of larger phones. I gave my parents an iPad about 3years ago and they used it all the time. Once I passed on my galaxy note 4 Phone to my dad (70) he hardly uses the tablet anymore. Phones are big enough to consume most media now and they’re almost always ‘on you’ and charged / ready to use.

I still have an iPad (10.5pro) but that’s mainly for work and sometimes used for watching Netflix in bed. I could easily make do with my phone for that though.

I'm kinda of in agreement here, phones really are capable of pretty much everything a tablet can do - and don't hurt as much when they fall on your face; whilst you lay browsing in bed :D Having said that, for me personally, I doubt I will ever switch to a phablet, so the larger screen is the prime reason that I still use mine.

£100....how did you get it that cheap ? Virgin are selling them for £249.
Is it 2nd hand ?

I've got a large-ish phone, a 4.7 inch screen. But it's not big enough to outdo an iPad for me. Guess this just proves that everyone is different.
4.7 wouldn’t do it for me either, 5.5+ and it’s doable although the tablet in bed is more enjoyable as well as being easier to hold.

Yep local facebay site . Keep an eye on eBay though as I've seen a few go really cheap . Just finished setting up retro X with a Bluetooth pad so now it's running all my retro stuff as well . Loving the kick stand

My issue with tablets was that it still felt like a mobile experience rather than a desktop one. If I wanted a mobile experience I would use my mobile and if I wanted a desktop one I would use my laptop. The middle category is just redundant to me.

Horses for courses and personal opinion.

Some people like a phone for just basic phone duties and then a tablet and desktop.

Others like a large phone and a laptop or desktop.

Personally I like iPhone SE for when I'm out exercising, Large android phone for day to day, Nexus 7 for taking to work, iPad 10.5in for home duties, 12in laptop for taking to my flat that I use for work, 15 in laptop for leaving at home and then a gaming desktop for my flat and house.....LOL

PS Working on Christmas Day is boring and it sucks :)

Once I stopped commuting my use of tablet has disappeared. At home I prefer to sit in front of my Mac and on the go I use my phone.

If I were still commuting then I would get another one but I don't so no point.

Exactly. Everybody's usage pattern and preference is different.

There's no right or wrong.

The tablet market is a shrinking one which is why no one other than Apple are supporting those kinds of devices beyond their initial release window. Even iPad sales are 1/3 less than they were 3 years ago and Apple is the only one selling a significant amount of units in the 'west'.

Tablets are being attacked from both sides these days, phones are getting bigger and laptops (ultra book style with SSD's and 2 in 1's) are getting cheaper and lighter. You also have devices like the Surface line taking some of the upper end market share.

I’ve just picked up the iPad 10.5 and keyboard, and it may just be my favourite ever portable device. It’s not cheap, for sure, but its far superior to a phone for using for reading, typing, watching movies and playing games. It’s cheaper than a good laptop but has a better screen than most, is more responsive than most, much better battery life, can handle games with ease, is far more portable, better speakers.

Some people may not see the need for such a device, but I for one won’t look back. It is I admit a bit of a toy, but I love the thing. Amazing just how well polished it is for a tablet compared with any rival. A laptop would have been overkill and wouldn’t have done many of the things I want as well, despite costing more. This thing fills a niche perfectly for my needs.

This shows you how good tablets can be - there is still room for improvement, it’s just that no other rival can match it, not by a long way. This is the first tablet experience that is approaching refined and for me it has a place in todays world no question. The keyboard (and to lesser extent, the pencil) make this device, and the software is perfectly written to take full advantage of it.

I use a tablet at home instead of a phone.

I can pay £150 for a device that does what I need, internet, streaming TV and Clash Royale, so it's not expensive.

I much prefer the extra screen size and it saves destroying phone batteries which I tended to find I was doing before when I used my phone all the time.

Yep agreed, I’ve written about that before, if I used phone for everything, I’d be charging twice a day, and I wouldn’t fancy squinting even at a 6” screen all day either.

That and I end up using the phone while it's charging and I'm sure that destroys battery life to the point I used to carry a battery pack even on a night out when I would barely be using my phone.

Indeed, I would charge my S7 Edge half way through a day if I was going out to make sure it survived. I would probably get a couple of days of light use out of my Pixel 2 XL but still wouldn’t risk going to a concert or festival without a battery pack.

Still use my Sony Z4 tablet daily and love it ! Other than something coming which is a bit faster I'm not really sure what would compel me to upgrade which I think is where the problem is.
Tablets aren't like phones which get replaced every year so they aren't as economically viable to pump r&d money into

I think this is a good point. My old Nexus 7 tablet still plays YouTube and browses the web fine, so I have no need to upgrade it.

This is true, but there is a market for faster / better devices. It’s a bit like a car. Nobody needs more than a Fiesta, but most would prefer a Porsche. Some people seem to write off the high end tablets as pointless, but I think there is a definitely a market for high quality devices as well. Better screens, speakers, more responsive, and so on.

You're not going to play YouTube videos any faster :p

For a phone sure performance matters for certain scenarios but tablets are often just media consumption devices.
