Guys/Gals
I'm about to rebuild my brothers machine with a full custom waterloop- 6700K, GTX1080ti and he was wondering about possible deliding and thermal paste
Before the rebuild, his temps on air with a 4.2GHz o/c hit around 70c when fully loaded- would expect this to fall with the water but is it worth delidding as well? He is occasional gamer, no video editing and I think his current temps are fine but he mentioned this.

Any recommendations would be gratefully received

His temps are fine really. Not sure what cooler he has now, and water will likely help. Though having said that, do not expect amazing jump in temps if he has a solid cooler now. Part of the issue is getting the heat transferred out of the CPU with Intel's toothpaste.

But back to the above, his current temps are perfectly fine as that is when its fully loaded, water will help a further, see no real reason to delid unless he is really into benching / achieving real high clock speeds or something. Even now he should be able to squeeze some more clock speed out that CPU perfectly fine.

thanks- confirmed what I thought but always good to hear the same

Depends if you want to bump the CPU as it’s probably capable of running @ 4.7/4.8 easily... Then delid is worth while as you’ll drop 15c off the load temps.

I don't know what the existing cooling is like but a 1080ti pumping out heat in to a case with a CPU heatsink is most likely driving up the CPU temps unless you have some serious case fans, so in a sense you are seeing CPU temps that are somewhat artificially high. In which case a custom loop would seriously decrease the temps of everything, in particular the CPU. Unless you are in search of absolutely the lowest temps possible then really I just wouldn't go there with the delid. I did a similar cooling modification to an older system that was getting a little warm. Problem with the system was the gtx980 was just boiling the CPU alive! A full (fun) rebuild with a nice new water cooling system and it knocked about 22 degrees C off the max CPU temp. Point is that I think you may find you are way better than fine when you install a custom loop.

I de-lidded recently using a tool, used 99% isopropryl to clean everything up, used a spudger to remove the silicone off the IHS and CPU pcb. Then used Conductonaut and kryonaught and black silicone to re-lid. It was very easy and provided you're careful it's unlikely anything will go wrong.

I would definitely look into it, but ONLY if you are able to use a tool, they are pretty much idiot proof, I certainly wouldn't use a blade, vice etc.

For many people the perceived risk put's them off, and they feel de-lidding is only a last resort measure. The temps you've quoted are fine, and a custom loop would improve them.

If he's willing to push the chip then a de-lid is recommended, if not then it's pointless.
