British woman jailed in Egypt for 3 years for bringing in painkillers

This reminds me at the airport duty free shop in Prague looking at Vodka infused with actual cannabis plant inside, I actually thought..."this is cool."

Then it hit me...errrrr not so clever when I land in Heathrow, quickly put that back down.

Seen tequila with plant/root infusion before but never something like that heh.

The death sentence or life imprisonment may have been a little harsh had she ended up with that but 3 years seems completely fair enough for trying to bring a large amount of illegal drugs into a country.

you'd have very likely been absolutely fine, while I don't know the specific product you were looking at I believe this sort of thing is typically THC free, it is just a marketing gimmick - Cannabis (with the active substance) is still illegal over there (albeit decriminalised for personal use and allowed on prescription for medical use) so I doubt they'd be flogging it in the airport unless THC free

you can buy cannabis vodka in the UK too:

Well, I found a photo for you.

Looking at that...I didn't want to risk it.

She didn't. She had a class C on her..its absolutely our problem.
Well I take that back then. Looks like the media are being very kind to her here. So not only did she illegally have a controlled substance here in the UK but a substantial quantity of it as well. Lucky she’s a fairly attractive women I guess.

My wife's been on tramadol before, it's pretty heavily controlled here. When I originally read about this woman my first thought was '300 tramadol is a lot' so she is either incredibly naive or not as innocent as portrayed.
Lucky she only got three years really.

LOL understandable to be fair - it is rather blatant! You'd potentially have had some fuss still if stopped even if perfectly legal.

You can buy that same brand in Tesco over there too btw...

Despatched from Italy.

main reason you don't see it in the UK is it breaches the Portman Group's code relating to marketing alcohol by associating with drugs, actually possessing it shouldn't be an issue

The law to trafficking is not so much of the substance but also the intent. If I were to smuggle 1kg of cocaine into the country and it turned out to be baking soda upon testing, the fact that I thought it was illegal thinking it was cocaine, it makes my action illegal and the attempt to smuggle whatever illegal substance still stands.

I could say "I thought it was parsley" defence but I doubt that will stick.

Regardless of her invent/naivety or whatever, this must be a pretty bloody awful situation to find yourself in.

You could also say it contains no THC and that would stick. Rather dubious you'd be charged in this case when you bought it legally in an airport on the way home from another country where selling actual cannabis is illegal without a prescription, there are plenty of cannabis branded products containing hemp etc.. sold in the UK just not alcohol related due to the code of practice mentioned earlier

But that is the same debate, legal in one country is not necessary legal in the other.

At that point at the airport I did not know the legality of cannabis in Czech Republic, nor is it relevant. From the bottle to me I can see it say Cannabis, and I know it is illegal in the UK so then the intention would be the intention to bring in an illegal substance into the UK. The fact that something else for sale on Amazon is irrelevant.

That's what it essentially comes down to.
