Sir Nick Clegg

The honours system is a joke. Let's not pretend otherwise.

It's less blatantly corrupt than it has been at some times in the past and much less important, so things have improved. There have been times in which honours were simply sold for cash, quite openly.

Nick Clegg is being knighted in the new year for his five years as a deputy PM. Can anyone tell me exactly what he did in those five years to be worthy of a knighthood?

I don’t care who or what he campaigns for, I just don’t see how he deserves a knighthood for essentially being little more than a lapdog to David Cameron. Knighthoods are handed out way too willy nilly imo.

Stood firm on red line issues like tuition fees.

:P :P :P

He diverted a large part of the hatred of the Coalition away from the Tories to the point that it was his party that was punished in the next general election, not the Tories; and he kept that hatred going long enough to prevent the LibDems from being a Remain rallying point in the Referendum, or even putting any nuance into the debate. Seems like politics to me.

Unless I'm reading this wrong, it seems like bloody pathetic epic failure politics to me!

What has clegg done? Without farage Cameron would never have even called for a referendum.

Like I have said, history will be very kind to Mr farage.

Disagree. I think the opposite. In years to come after it is shown it was the wrong decision and more and more truth comes out as to how he lied and manipulated people and who was pulling his strings, he will one day be viewed the same way as Lord Haw-Haw and a traitor to his country.

I think he's one of the few that actually deserves it and always seems like a decent bloke.

Not to pick your particular post alone as most are very similar but you don't get, and should never get a Knighthood just for being a "decent bloke". You should have to earn it (despite the committee being a bent as a nine bob note etc) and, as it is the highest honour Liz can bestow (KGC or KC), it should only be earned for something truly out of the ordinary/above and beyond etc, neither of which any politician in modern times has been.

My main argument against Nick is, if he gets a Knighthood for Deputy PM, why didn't Cameron for being the actual PM etc? So basically I could see maybe an MBE (the lowest "rank" of honour, still amazing) or maybe even an OBE for a long standing MP or a Deputy PM who did great things for the country but Clegg has been none of those and really done nothing "for the country and it's citizens" which is what the awards all given for, i.e. it is a "national honour for merit, exceptional achievement or service" (taken from the website) and do we really believe Clegg has made an exceptional achievement or service at all and is therefore deserving the highest possible honour?

My old boss was an MBE holder for work in Iraq and the perks it opens up are very nice to have, including allowing your kids to get married in St Pauls Cathedral etc.

Anyone that really believes history will look kindly on Nigel Farage is utterly deluded in the same way as people that still think Trump is a great president who can do no wrong. Unless of course we are talking about the "Daily Mail Big Book of British History" or similar...

Without farage Cameron would never have even called for a referendum.

Nonsense. Cameron called for a referendum because he desperately needed to appease the Tories' Brexit faction. With Boris constantly sneaking sideways glances at the leadership, he didn't have much choice. Boris changed his mind when he realised just how insanely difficult and unpopular Brexit was going to be.

Like I have said, history will be very kind to Mr farage.

History will roast him like the Christmas turkey he resembles.

Genuinely interested in what his supporters think his successes are? Because I don't think tempering Conservative policies is a particularly worthy example. Perhaps one of the biggest credits I could give to the Lib Dems as a whole is that they were able to work with opponents stably for the duration of the term. But they would never have had a sniff of power otherwise.

Surprised there's still support for the man. Always thought the right saw him as treacherous and unprincipled, and the left saw him as...treacherous and unprincipled, along with being neoliberal and austerity supporting to boot.

Intelligent, slick, and chameleon-like. The classic (pre-2016) politician.

I've only been in the country for 16 years, but over that entire time, I thought to coalition was actually the best government we've had.
