Hi All

Finally able to make a very long delayed PC upgrade and I'm torn between ordering a custom built rig from OCUK (germanium with a few changes) or buying and assembling myself. I'm keen on getting two M.2 drives and setting up with RAID 0 config to make everything future proof, but not done this myself previously. The £2500 budget isn't super strict.

Just ordered the Samsung C32HG70, so that is already sorted.

Self Build:
Case: Be Quiet Silent Base 600 Midi (£117.95) - CA-102-BQ
Motherboard: ROG MAximus X hero (£239.99) - MB-6AG-AS
CPU: i7-8700k - (£349.99) - CP-63R-IN
GPU: MSI 1080Ti (£749.99) - GX-33J-MS
RAM: Vengeance RGB 16GB (£209.99) - MY-4AA-CS
SSD: 2x 960 PRO Polaris 512GB (2x £278.99) - HD-22J-SA
PSU: Corsair TX850M 850W (£123.95) - CA-236-CS
Water Cooler: NZXT Kraken X52 (£129.95) - HS-01B-NX

Total: 2479.79

Anything that you would change/recommend? I'll get Windows 10 from somewhere else.

Thanks

Hi welcome to the forum :)

Is this a gaming build ?

I personally wouldn't bother doing RAID on the SSD's. Won't really make any difference to real world performance for things like gaming or boot times etc.

I would go X62 over the smaller X52 or another 280mm/360mm depending if it fits the case. More cooling the better for the 8700K.

A 650W psu is enough unless you want the option to SLI ?

Nice monitor but you won't be able to use the Freesync function with an Nvidia gpu. There isn't really an AMD option anyway that will run 4K anyway so your choice is pretty much limited to the 1080 ti. I would have gone with a 27" or 34" (1440p) G-Sync myself.

So the £2500 budget is just for the Tower ?

Yea, the budget is tower only.

Thanks for the RAID tip. If the real world performance is comparable then I can just save a bit of money.

To the best of my knowledge the x62 won’t fit the case.

I might be after SLI in the future so I’ll Lee my options open.

I chose the monitor for HDR - they’ve been tested with nvidea cards and seem to do well with that.

Forgot to ask about what thermal paste and gloves, been a while since I built a PC...

Slight change to your list, save some cash in beef up cooling and storage long with PSU

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £2,240.87 (includes shipping: £0.00)

If you wanted to max the budget, keep everything matching and RGB theme exactly the same , with the diffused board and ram - then bequiet base 700 with diffused lighting in case side to match the strip on the board

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £939.58 (includes shipping: £12.60)

All would be synchronised, all Asus and all Strix brand

Similar spec to what I am looking at and I will prob go with the Germanium prebuild just because the cost over the component price is minimal, its pre overclocked and has a 3yr collect and return warranty. You can ask them to make changes if you prefer a different component.

GPU wise I would go for the Asus ROG Strix version over the MSI as just more information avalible on it and seems very well regarded at the same price as the MSI.

Think it's more the fact for fun self build for OP after a while and joys of self overclocking :)

Thanks for all the input! I’ve made some changes now and it looks really good and nicely aligned. I’ll just get the one m2 ssd for now to see how it goes.

Push the 1TB drive if you can, saves buying another SSD down the line - but sits you at the top of your budget .
Also add another 140mm PWM silent wing , so you can add to the front for 2x 140 intake .

Or you could just move the one installed at the front to top rear and have the 360 AIO in the front . All depends how you want the look .
Also if you want to invert the Mobo upside down so Fans and fan Lighting is on show ;)

I've asked them for a quote of the items and they quoted me higher than the individual items added up - £2256.18. Not willing to do that purely on principle.

What do you mean a quote on the items - surely you just add them to your basket and look at the total?

It was just for the components unfortunately. Their deal ran out on the CPU so that is why the price went up. So I’ve done some shopping around and ordered the processor for £350 somewhere else. Also, there is a 20% discount on everything on eBay today. Will purchase the rest of the things I need from OCUK now. Thanks for your help everyone, just a shame I couldn’t get everything from one place for a reasonable price.

Why things go. Prices for ram and SSD will set to increase. Intel prices will always be high but Ryzen is now forcing their hand to either lower it or produce better chips :)

Get some snap up of the build or process :D
