I have contemplated ryzen for some time, but being forced into this upgrade due to outgrowing current system (need more cores)

The build will be for Unraid, running 3 VMs and dockers. I ideally want 32gb ram, but unsure if best to go with 2x8gb now (16gb total) and buy another 2x8gb later on when prices drop/if they drop? or just get 2x 16gb now?

What CPU air cooling for ryzen?

I have the following
Case fractal R5
PSU EVGA 850W
HDD

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £770.46 (includes shipping: £10.50)

imo, this would me my spec:

the 1700 is basically a slightly lower clocked 1800x, and it comes with the stock cooler which is pretty decent. the 1800x doesn't come with a cooler.
the stock cooler is good for a mild overclock.
cheaper mobo - still has 6x sata ports (vs the prime x370 which has 8)
32gb ram straight off the bat (slightly slower clocked, yes, but insanely cheap)
the pm961 is the oem version of the 960evo (£10 less, but you get only 2 years warranty vs 3 years with the 960evo)

for a extra tenner or so you can get the 3600Mhz ram

How many disks will you be using for unraid? Is the data on the system valuable? What kind of performance will you wanting over the network? And is this going to be running 24/7?

Might be worth considering something with 10gb ethernet, and if the data is valuable it might be worth thinking about if ECC might be justifiable...

thanks for the replies and recommendations.

The server will be a Plex Server along with VM's for work, unifi docker, sabnzb, raddarr etc

8 Disks, i will need 2 GPU's as i need 2 VMS running with passthrough for the 2 main VMs

I was considering TR, however GPU passthrough still isnt great.

I've had mixed results with GPU passthough on both TR and Ryzen on a variety of boards. When Epyc becomes more available in Europe it should offer much better options in this regard - though single threaded performance on Epyc won't be great compared to TR due to the much lower clocks....

If that's an essential feature for your build you may want to consider going for Xeon - will cost a lot more though!

Hi Bongo,

Didnt the ryzen and GPU issues get resolved? I read that with TR it is still an issue.

Ive waited 6mths for ryzen and issues with unraid to be resolved, i was hoping it was nearly there now.

Single GPU is ok, multi GPU seems to be fraught with peril.
Your host OS is going to need to be completely headless in any current setup with Ryzen.

ok i see, thanks for the headsup.

So the unraid system would be headless with VM1 (main windows machine) passed directly to GPU.

Would the system still need 2 GPU's, or would 1 be sufficent.

Thanks

regards Gfx card. Is there a prefrence when using with AMD.

I want something low powered and capable of office work, no gaming at the moment :/

It will make no odds if your not gaming, an Nvidia 710/730 would be fine. Depending on the apps you use there maybe some value in a Nvidia GTX 1030 - some apps can benefit from GPU acceleration and the 1030 is leaps ahead of the cheaper NVidia options in this regard.

Edit: 1030 would also be fine for some light gaming if you have the want or opportunity for it.

Thanks again,

Got what is looking like my final order, im building 2 of these systems (the other is with a friend). I need to go with the Asus X370 pro as this is the most cost effective due to having 8 SATA ports. The step to 10SATA ports is another £100.

Total: £815.45 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Not much to change from your final spec, except maybe to get a GPU with active cooling rather than a passive one. Passive GPUs depend on case airflow and case size (not that the 1030 is particularly power hungry, but)

I m going with the giabyte board, based on the gigabyte tech being active on this forum and i always go Asus. so it will be nice to change, my last gigabyte board was with my i3 media HTPC.

Is there a bargain based gfx card, something that is cost effective "best bang for buck". 1050 or 1060 ??

Is there a decent aircooler for the ryzen or is stock sufficent.

stock is sufficent, but if you wanna keep cooler get
