California prepares to legalize marijuana on New Year's Day

It's the final step from California anyway. Wonder how many bad backs will no longer need a prescription now ?

Personally no issue with this I think education and regulation are the answer for everything in the classic psychoactive vault. Stuffing prisons with addicts isn't very helpful for anyone.

California has been a lost cause for years, may as well have all the illegals drugged up on legal dope... They just can't help themselves, these liberals.

Its a mess. One of the benefits should be that legalising it makes it taxable and reduces criminality as no need for drug lords, smugglers, dealers and so on. Unfortunately the banks won't touch a "legal" pot business due to it still being illegal at the federal level, so they become all cash businesses, which is then a recipe for tax dodging and illegal activity !

California isn’t the first state to legalise marijuana. From a distance, it doesn’t appear that legalising it has caused the apocalypse in states like Colorado.

There is to my mind a big difference between "Decriminalisation" and "Legalisation"

I would not wish to see recreational narcotics like Cannabis commercialized and sold in the local corner shop, but i would be happy to see growing at home for personal use decriminalised.

Bottom line, by what logic should growing and consuming a plant become a criminal act....

The only difference legalising it out there will make is there will be weed shops for non-medical users to buy from. It’s so popular out there, it may as well be legalised :p

I think it’s a good thing - and it should be legalised everywhere (it’s only a matter of time). It has never made sense to me to charge people criminal offences for its use, and the amount of tax they can make from it is huge.

Good news.

Strange how a plant which grows naturally and never killed anyone can be so condemned and made illegal yet I could grow as much Valerian or Nightshade as I wanted to. Could probably get away with smoking tobacco outside a school too.

Weird times.

How do you ensure they don’t sell it? How do you ensure vulnerable people aren’t taking it? How do you ensure undesirable strains do infiltrate the market? How do you ensure people know what they’re taking? Etc. Like most drugs, used in the wrong way by the wrong people, there’s a lot of scope for harm. Prohibition basically doesn’t work, but it could be regulated in a way which protects people and stills allows most people to smoke to their heart’s content.

But the same would apply to home brewing kits for beer/wine, remember they used to make moonshine in bathtubs during the prohibition.
