What the driveway/access laws now?

I've had a search but can't find anything definitive.
I've got a driveway down the side of my house (registered business address) that leads to a small yard where I park 3-4 of my minibuses, I have a car parked toward the road end also.
Someone has parked there car on my driveway blocking me in with there front bumper half blocking the path.

I have done some researching and it seems there wont be a lot the police can do? I need the car out for an airport taxi run at 4.45am -.- (my business is airport transfers) I've been up and down the street and nobody knows anything about the car.

Has anyone had this and know the options?

(you can see the front of the car at the top, some crappy seat thing)

Check with your local council website to see if they will do you a tow. I'd also check with the police on their non-emergency number, as at the very least it's causing an obstruction and blocking access, but they might say the drive is private land.

Know anyone with a tow truck who can move it?

As a business you might get more action from the police.

I know they put in a window and moved a car that way that was blocking a delivery van on my road (and blocked us) but the guy (who was blocked in) was out on his rounds which might have made a difference.

I'm really glad I was just coming back from work when the driver came back - turned out he'd parked and gone for a bike ride - started laying into the police coz of the broken window and they tore him a new one - made my day.

I thought they could act if it was restricting your access to the highway, which it is.

We had a car block our drive, they wouldn't do anything as no car was on the drive. If there had been, I think they can do something. As suggested, call 101 and see what they say.

I had a neighbor when I was at my parents park their two cars 2 inches off my bumper either end because I parked outside their house (Terraced street, not much I can do when that's the only space at the time)

Phoned 101 and they phoned the registered keeper to move their cars or they'd take further action

Might be different down south, but up here you can block people out of their property, but blocking people in is a police matter.

As I understand it, and I have called the police on two occasions and they have assisted, the offence is the same (unnecessary obstruction) regardless of whether the obstructing vehicle is preventing access to or from the highway, but the action the police will take differs.

In the instance of an obstructing vehicle preventing access TO the highway (I.e. blocking you on your driveway) they will go as far as removing the onbstructing vehicle, but if it is only preventing access FROM the highway (I.e. stopping you from getting on to your driveway) they will only go as far as issuing a penalty notice, the thinking being that you can park elsewhere.

On the past occasions when I have called the police the first time we were blocked on the river and the second we couldn’t get on to the drive. On both occasions the police contacted the registered keeper and requested they moved their car, which they did. This would be their normal first step before they do anything else. If they are unable to reach the registered keeper then further action will follow.

Sounds like unsolicited goods, your car now!

Unfortunately this isn't the case, much as it should be :/

Good luck with the police

Well that was very surprising and unexpected at the same time!

They turned up in an unmarked X5 with handguns!, contacted the owner on a mobile who turned up 5 minutes later (she was visiting someone on the next street apparently)
she'd had a few to many so the policeman moved it for her, he also gave me a number to contact for having road markings put over the entrance and a sign for council enforceable no parking \o/ (not that clamping them would help me at silly o'clock)

but overall, sorted :)

Good to hear the police doing a great job, normally only hear about the negative stuff. Decent of you to report back :)

Wow, they turned up armed?! I thought maybe you were then going to say the car was owned by a drug lord or something?

Glad to know the Police did something about it and it all got sorted.

Glad to here it's sorted. It's infuriating when it happens.

In my old place we had a chupa-chup of a neighbour that would continually park, blocking me in, across my drive. Now I had the drive & drop kerb fitted and before then he'd always try to park outside my house. No idea why it was that important to him.

After a few warnings by the police he was still doing it. So the police came and removed it. He didn't do it again

TBH if no one will do anything in this situation. Find someone with a big 4x4, stick a tow eye in it and drag it down the road. **** it.
