Well, I was browsing eBay for a car I've wanted for many years (as you do) and at the worst time of year I found one with just the spec I want. Damn it.

I talked myself out of it - it's the wrong time, wait until I've sold something to make room etc etc... however the festive tipple got the better of me and I ended up buying it. :D

Not to everyone's taste, and it's undoubtedly going to be ruinous to own - but I now own a relatively high-spec LWB Phaeton. :D
Undoubtedly the most boring engine of the lot, I had to get the 3.0 TDI as I cover a lot of miles and the others just weren't feasible. Also it's fairly DIY-friendly, unlike the larger engines where total engine removal is needed for most major jobs.

81,000 miles, lots of history, many toys (massaging front seats, heated and cooled front and rears, about 3,000 cup holders, 4Motion etc) and not so terrible 32MPG as an initial average.
The rear legroom is absolutely insane.

Needs a wash as I brought it home quite some distance through awful conditions!

Also, inb4 'It's a Passat' :p

I like the wood. How does it drive? Arguably VW invested a lot of time and energy in this car, even if they were never a huge success, it’s still an impressive piece of kit.

I love the Phaeton. You really have to read between the lines to see what a masterpiece of engineering it was, just look at the boot hinges for example. I heard a rumour once that the only reason VAG stopped making them was because they already had Bentley and no VW was going to take thise sales. Lovely car, enjoy it :)

Very nice a rare sight too. I like the Phaeton, i have been tempted by one of these in the past, i bet that is was a comfy ride home? You can pick them up for a sensible price now....?

Moral of the story, not motto, surely? :p

I love the Phaeton. I hope that it's relatively reliable for you! How much did it set you back?

great barge of a car, v cool. Only recently I spotted a Doug DeMuro vid of the W12 version, which reminded me of the oddball VW super-barge.

Is it one of the odd cars with an umbrella tucked in the doors? Can't remember if that's a Phaeton thing of not.

Funny how with some minor changes to the external styling, hub caps and sticking Bentley on the front of the name instead of VW it would have been perceived as a more prestigious vehicle. As it is it is just an oversized Passat ;)

I'll be honest I looked at the pics and thought what exactly is different from a passat.

I don't know much about these if I'm honest, apart from Clarkson once boiling a kettle inside one to show how it doesn't steam up inside.

Very nice. A chap at my gym has the W12 and on a cold start it sounds absolutely stunning.

Be interesting to see how much general upkeep and maintainence is.

I'd love one to run around in for a few months before they become so old there's next to no chance of getting a decent one.

Still worth a reasonable sum of money a diesel (albeit a pittance compared to list) of that age
