Looking at booking up a holiday with a few friends for end of June - mid July and pretty set on Coral Bay in Cyprus.

Anyone been , have any opinions on what its like etc.. things to see/do?

Thanks

I have been there. It’s quite nice, cetainly better than places like Limassol and Aiya Napa, far quieter for families. Just a short taxi ride into paphos where there’s a few things to do, mainly historical. Quite a few ancient ruins in Paphos. Some decent restaurants in Paphos as well. There’s a place called Fat Mamas which is very popular. Foods good and it has a good vibe going on. There’s also a great Chinese called the Hunan which is on the same road called the tombs of the kings avenue. Plenty of Greek Cypriot food places around too. Coral Bay itself is quiet but quite pretty though with your usual quiet bars and little restaurants. If you want decent nightlife then Paphos is OK, but Ayia Napa obviously a lot livelier, maybe too lively for some.

Just got back from Cyprus and stayed in Paphos.
We hired a car for the week and travelled all over southern Cyprus. The island is so small that if you get bored you can travel anyway and back in a day easily.
Paphos to Ayia Napa only takes 2 hours. Paphos is about 15mins down the road from Coral Bay.

Trudos mountains are defineatly a must see. There is a main road from Limasol called the B8 and it takes you all the way to the top of Mount Olympos and is an easy drive. Mount Olypos is the highest part of Trudos at 6,000ft.
Limasol has a brand new harbour which is definately worth a visit in the evening for a meal with so many restaurants.
Nicosia is also a worthy visit just to see the north and south devide. It was the best part of the holiday for me. Its a busy city but you can go to the top of the H&M building to see the city from both sides and has 360° views. Crossing the border is easy on foot as well, you just have to flash your passport.

They drive on the left in Cyprus and roads are easy to drive. Feels much like the U.K but just not as busy.

If you are near Paphos, hire a 4x4 and go to Lara Bay. Its well off the beaten track but is the best virtually deserted beach you'll find and the water is crystal clear. Its got turtle nests all over too, its a protected turtle sanctuary. Its really only known to the locals, i've been there for work over a dozen times and know a few now.

Yes i like Nicosia, its where i go with work. There next week as it happens.

Civilised places to eat are Ricos and Oniros which are very close, I wouldn't bother with the restaurants on the strip. See if you can stop at Karnavallos on your way from/to the airport!
Off roading on the Akamas might be up your street.

Just a word of warning. Things in Cyprus basically cost the same as the U.K.
A coffee in a remote village will be €1.50 but in a popular tourist area it'll be €3.
Food is similar to U.K prices but shopping malls are more expensive.
Fuel is around €1.22 for petrol a litre.

Edit: when in Coral Bay go to Laourou beach instead of Coral Bay beach. They are right next to each but Laourou beach is soooo much better.

Also been to Paphos, over a year ago now for a wedding and its become my favourite place in the world, blooming hot though!

My other half’s parents live in Mandria which is a few minutes from Paphos airport and about 20minutes drive from Paphos itself.

We’ve been to Coral Bay a few times but there are better beaches around as said, her parents have lived there for 11years but don’t go to Coral bay at all - far better options around, if you want quiet deserted beaches, Cyprus has plenty which are off the tourist track and the cafe bars there tend to be much cheaper.

One thing I would highly recommend is the Vouni Panayia Winery up in the Troodos mountains, excellent wines at good prices and they do a very informative tour along with superb food in their restaurant, being so high up the views are fantastic!

And if your up in the Troodos, pop into the Extreme View Cafe (clue in the name!) looks a bit ordinary from the road but don’t let this deceive you, the food is fantastic, reasonable prices, and the view looking out of the dining area takes some beating, Sunday is the best day to go.

Google both for the trip advisor reviews which reflect my recommendation I think.

Another while I think about it is Viklari otherwise knows as The last Castle just outside Paphos, outdoor eating (under vines to keep in the shade) with fantastic views, very highly recommended!

We go here each time we visit, pretty basic choice of food tbh (BBQ) but an eating experience that’s hard to beat.

Another thing, if you find it too hot in July & August (which it usually is) Cyprus is beautiful but still very warm in April and May before the sun has dried everything out - the colour of the countryside is starkly different to the barren desert esque scenery you find in the hot months.

Love the island, went twice last year and will be going again this year.

@Scania thanks for those suggestions gonna have a look now. We’re reserving a villa between ten of us so if there is a day that isn’t too over bearingly hot we can venture out and do that.

Going first week in July I believe, what kinda weather should we expect? Baking hot or uncomfortable hot? :D

Mid 30’s to low 40’s is my experience (in the shade mind you!) at that time of year, if it’s dry, the heat isn’t a problem at all (really!) but, when it’s humid it’s a killer!

We returned to our hire car last August, it had been parked in the sun for a few hours, the temperature gauge read 59c before we drove off!!! (Such readings aren’t related to the actual ambient temperature, but, you get the picture I’m sure, Cyprus is nearer to Syria than it is Greece iirc)

Ultimately, drink plenty - of water! - , DON’T sunbathe and go to the beach after 4pm and the sun/heat really isn’t a problem.

But, walking for 10minutes to the shop around 2pm will result in sunburn, trust me!

We've been a few times actually. We stayed in Paphos last summer too, in Alexander the Great hotel. We had such a good time in that hotel I would recommend it without hesitation. I've also done Troodos, but we did it in the winter. Snow covered, and beautiful. It was a totally different experience.

Coral bay is my go to villa holiday destination. The bigger villas are nice and private but you can easily drive anywhere and everywhere. Plenty to see and do no matter what your interests are or just light up a BBQ and relax. Cypriots really know how to BBQ. There’s a great English speaking butcher on the main road between Paphos and Coral Bay who serves all the ex pats.

Same, I've stayed at one of the villas in Coral Bay, right near the sea and loved it.

I lived at Akrotiri, near Limassol from Aug ‘03 for 2 years and from Jul ‘07 for 2 years- both with the family. The wife and I went back for the first time at the end of Sep/early Oct ‘17 for a week.

The island is lovely and has smartened up considerably. Since the Euro it is expensive though. I would recommend Troodos/Mount Olympus, Platres, Petra tou Romiou for an afternoon dip, Chris’ kebabs on the Aki strip for a ‘full kebab’ if you dare!

Be ready for the heat from June onwards.

Been to Paphos many times,Beautiful place tbh,you wont have any hassle walking around late at night or early in the morning either..having been there many times though defiantly starting to become more built up,property developers snatching up all the empty land and building Villas.
They've recently built a HUGE mall between coral bay and the harbour, and its really nice in there.
It has gone expensive since going EURO though but where hasn't tbh? :)

Got any more questions fire away.
