Furthest you have travelled in a car

When I was younger I took a bay windowed VW camper to the South of France, then over to Chamonix, nipped into Switzerland, down to Courmayeur in Northern Italy then back home to Blighty.

Quite the road trip but the van needed an engine rebuild when we finally got back home!

Not hugely far really.

Calgary to Estevan when I was working in Canada. About 570 miles. But I was always doing 400+ mile drives then. Usually only stopping once to fill up the truck.
But also did Dundee to Paris once too. Which is around 750 miles.

Going the other way from Calgary (North West) - you can "easily" do 700 odd miles on what is essentially a wide B road on and on and on incredibly monotonous unless you really really like pine trees :s (aside from the odd interesting bits).

(EDIT: Don't get me wrong there are some great places around there but if you are just doing a long journey it quickly gets more of the same repeat).

Same with Detroit heading West - its like doing the dualled bit of the A303 through Salisbury Plain area over and over and over.

Its one thing I do like about longer UK car journeys there is usually a fair bit of variation along the way.

Wiltshire to Trento, Italy - that was over 4 days
Return journey was Trento > Dijon then Dijon to Wiltshire in 2 days.

It's pretty much the same going East. You're basically in prairie land there, and it is just monotonous nothing, save for the occasional MASSIVE grain tower.

At least going North or West you have trees to look at. Going East, there is virtually nothing.

I mean if you go via Banff, etc. then that makes things interesting heh but still. I seem to have largely managed to hit the worst parts of the US and Canada for long road trips in my visits (mostly not holidays).

That’s why I really want self driving cars. Set destination and forget. At the moment we’re basically at set cruise control and sit for hour after hour adjusting wheel a tiny amount occasionally.

Without stopping about 220 miles from Kent to Wales
In a day about 700 miles from Woking to Lugano in Switzerland
On a road trip about 3,500 miles over two weeks around France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy

I'd get really bored if I was sat there for hours not doing anything, I'd rather drive! I don't even mind motorways, as long as they're not crazy busy.

Sat for hours not doing anything is what you’re doing when you’re driving. I can spend an hour or more with both feet off the pedals and just a finger on the wheel, counteracting the camber of the road.

It’s saying something when the highlight of some trips can be a stop sign. You actually have to wake up and do something!:p

If the car was autonomous I could be looking at the scenery more, browsing the web or doing any number of other things I couldn’t legally/practically do now.

I'm usually watching the road and paying attention to what's going on in front and behind - I consider that to be doing something!

That concentration is why you can’t do anything else, hence wanting an autonomous car.

It’s just a totally different driving experience to the UK and Europe, you can drive for hours and not see another vehicle or other “obstruction” on the road, but you need to be aware just in case something does pop up.
