I took the cats to the vets yesterday for their yearly booster and checkup to find out that Dexter has feline oral resorptive lesions. Poor guy is going to have to have one of his teeth out in the new year. It certainly hasn't stopped him eating though as he's 5.4kg! All he does now he's a bit older is sleep and eat, and as he doesn't go outside he ends up eating all of Hettys food too.

Holly is 6.5Kg - she is a house cat and just sits by her bowls all day and stares at you every time you go by - Vet said it's steroids making he eat more - Just hope everything works out and we can cut her food down - She looks like a sleeping Walrus - I think she feels better as she stays with us at night in lounge - before, she went to bed and was a bit grumpy. - Wish to hell they could talk - would save a lot of guessing on our part.

Had a bit of a scare with Holly today - got up this morning and she was nowhere to be found - got torch out and searched around back of furniture and all nooks and crannies - only place I didn't look was right behind door next to sofa. - She didn't move - looked at litter tray and it was unused - usually over night might get two pees and a poo. -filled her food bowl - where are you ?? Finally she came out but didn't move far - didn't eat or drink that I could see.

It's always the case with situations like this that wife is away with the car and wasn't due back till afternoon - Rang her sister and spoke to wife and she came back - In meantime rang Vet and got her in for 5.00 - We both thought we would bring her home in a box - She is overweight and on steroids - Vet recons she has inflammation on pancreas so off steroids and a few pain killing injections - She is moving around a bit now but won't be happy till see a pee and poo and she eats some more before we go to bed - otherwise it's back to vet

These are the bad times - very stressful

I know this is supposed to be cheerful thread, but I know you're all cat fans so I was hoping you'd be able to offer me some advice. Mods please move if inappropriate.

I took my cat (Austin) to the vet earlier today because he's been suffering from a few bloating issues. Anyways, they said he's very likely got FIP, which is fatal, and there is no known treatment.

I'm at bit shocked to say the least. He's only 5. We have two small children and he's become quite an indispensable part of the family.

The vet was a bit non-committal about prognosis beyond saying it would be fatal and we'd likely have to have the Austin put down as his condition deteriorates.

My big concern is I don't really want my kids to see Austin get really sick, and don't know what to look for in terms of when it's time to call it a day.

Do any of you have any experience of FIP or advice on what I can expect?

Take him to another vet for a second opinion mate, we took one of ours and it was doom and gloom, the other one explained the problem and alls good. not the same problem as your cat but it's always worth asking someone else.

I guess it's worth a shot :)

Sorry to hear about Austin - It is devastating when your cat is ill - We had one and Vet was all we shall give her this and that and keep her going don't worry to much yet - We left it to late - should have taken her in a long time before we did - you will see the deterioration as time goes by but you have to be strong to say "that's it" - It's not fair on the cat.

We took Holly to Vet last night and we were certain we were going to bring her home in a box - if it had been anything serious with no happy outcome we would have pulled the plug.

Happy to say today she is back to normal - eating - drinking -but not litter tray yet - we are hoping for the best and we will see.

We still have to take her to another branch of our Vet to have her ear looked at by a specialist there but this isn't life threatening "hopefully"

Thanks, was that FIP?

Austin is still doing pretty well. He's very bloated and struggles to jump. He doesn't go out much either, and sleeps most of the time. Refuses to use the cat flap.

Strangely now he's a bit older and he has his thick winter coat he actually looks the best he ever has.

It's quite difficult to come to terms with how my otherwise young and healthy cat can one day show a few minor symptoms which are fatal within weeks.

If FIP is feline aids then yes that is what it was - we found she slept all day and night and didn't walk far - also her gums were white - we came home from work one night and she just managed to walk to corner of house to greet us - we took her to vet later that night.

I hope this new year turns out better than the end of this old one.

After a trip to Vet Holly has certainly perked up - she is now eating and has had pee and poo so we are sticking drops down her ear and hoping - I have a gut feeling her main problem is her teeth although vet said they look OK - but she struggles to eat and we have to chop it up very small - I can't see this being ear related. But who am I to say - We are paying the Vet a lot of money to get to bottom of her problems.

Some potentially great news for us cat lovers. Police believe they may have caught the Croydon cat killer. He was arrested after slaughtering five cats in Northampton. Vicious *******, I hope he gets the absolute maximum sentence and is monitored very closely for the rest of his life. A few beatings from inmates wouldn't go amiss either. He struck two streets away from me in November. A family cat was found decapitated and with its tail cut off on the owners driveway :(

He has been released while they investigate further, so it's not a definite just yet.
