Teacher maternity leave...

I know I have been coming here long enough to just think :eek: wtf has happened! GD used to have some really weird/freaky/strange/odd threads that shocked or made you laugh.

It's the new generation coming through, they have been feminised!

Surely if a contract was for 39 weeks she wouldn't get paid for the remaining 13? Congrats BTW, at least being a teach will make it easier with regards to pickup and drop-off in the not so far future.

How so? My wife is a teacher and I'm a college lecturer - we still need to pay for before and after school club as we both have to be in work before the kids start school and we don't finish until after the kids finish school.

Teachers don't start work at 9 and finish at 3 you know :(

Our school holidays don't even align that often either since LA's were given control over setting their own holidays (wife and kids are in different's LA's) - academies are even worse!
 
if you worked a normal salaried mon-fri then the min 2 weeks off would surely be 2 calendar weeks....rather than almost 3 working weeks to make up the 14 days

or if you worked one day a week (I wish) it's not 14 weeks to make up the days (is it?)

I figured when they were a bit older they would just stay with their mum/dad at school and do homework.

Hardly any teachers I know have thier kids at the same school they work at.

And those that do dont have thier kids with them because, well, they are at work. My wife's school specifically prohibits it - if any teacher has kids at the school, they go in before or after school club. Most schools have a similar policy.

@Diagro Not read through the thread but when I took my leave the school was very generous in the way they handled it. Wifes waters broke on Sunday, was in the Hospital Monday and baby was born on Tuesday at 5.45pm.

As baby was born after working day my school allowed for paternity to start on the weds whilst offering the Monday and Tuesday as compassionate leave.

Also people saying that it starts at the time of birth are talking nonsense. The school I am at allows for fathers to take their paternity in the first 6 months so entirely dependent on contract.

My wife is a teacher and I've worked in multiple schools over the past 11 years. Unless you are cover (sick, maternity etc...) all the contracts we've ever seen or heard of are 52 weeks.

If the contract was 39 weeks of the year they'd need to give you holiday within those weeks.

Her maternity will start when the child is born or up to 11 weeks early (or anything in-between - whatever you decide). If this is the end of July she'll spend the first 6 weeks of her maternity leave off when all the other teachers are and it's just tough luck. She can take up to a year off so could decide go back to work on 26th July 2019, work 1 day and then have 6 weeks off fully paid.

eh? Maternity will start at the time of the birth and part of it is statutory. Paternity is rather different for obvious reasons and can be more flexible!

We both work 7:30-5 on site.
(Not to mention the... Hours working at home...)

Thanks :) looking forward to it. And in really happy I'm off for those first 6 weeks.

Not many father's will get that time with a child I suppose.
 
I would also be in the same boat, but I have year 11 mocks and controlled assessment to finalise marks on. It's taking... A while :/

I’m not marking the controlled assessment until I hear back from the exam board to see if it is worth marking....
 
FWIW read the Burgundy Book (specifically pages 13-15). It clearly includes school closures (holidays) in all calculations. For example a teacher must return to work for 13 weeks to ensure they don't have to return any maternity pay. You can set your return to work to be the first day of the summer holiday, meaning 6 of your 13 weeks 'back at work' are actually time off. Meaning you only need to be in school from 1st Sept to around Oct half term to ensure you owe nothing.

Maternity and teachers is very clear and easy, you should work out the best way with dates for your situation.

The ideal for a teacher would be a due date of 1st Sept, you could then end up having 13 months off consecutively (July through to the following Sept) but actually only be on maternity leave for 11 months.

It doesn't, however the academies I currently work for have pretty much taken the book word for word into their own contracts as it covers them and is semi expected within the industry.

I would be surprised if they drastically differed from the book.

For TUPE staff yeah, the contracts are similar to the burgandy book. For new starters though, it's like the wild west out there. It's not uncommon to find academies with two tier contracts.

I’m relatively new to teaching and my terms and conditions are the standard teacher terms and conditions and I work in an academy. The majority in this area at least still keep to standard T&Cs because they would have recruitment issues otherwise.

Yeah, recruitment issues I get - a local senior school advertised for a Computing lead for 18k with no teaching quals necessary and only statutory annual leave (i.e. 5.6 weeks). They didn't fill it until the upped the salary to match NQT rates and added two weeks to the annual leave allowance.
