What's a decent first car for a 22 year old? [Updated]

Thing is there's no middle ground with Subarus these days. They are either workhorses and the owner doesn't care about damage, or they are cherished with careful owners :D

True, that was an older one thought, just to support the newer one which placed smarts at the top
I am not surprised, I wouldn't want an accident in one either! So its not much of a surprise they have the lowest count of own fault per 1000 :)

Well, that's what the price of the insurance is, not the difference. But still, it's a little more

Ah, okay. So what was the difference? What were the quotes for Polo/Fiesta?

Nah to really put it to bed he needs a quote for a Koenigsegg Agera RS, I bet a 21 year old has never pranged one, so with zero claims it should be really cheap to insure as its not a "young drivers car" ;)

:p

I'd definitely fork out another 100 quid to insure a decent sized car as a first car, but thats just me!

Basically you want something that everyone else hates, but rare. So there's very little statistics :D

Or a Jaaaag, only old people drive those.

Mk3/NC MX-5 2.0 comes out cheap for me for some reason at 19 2 years NCB
or do you need more than 2 seats?
Believe came with auto as well

Just what I was going to say. Skoda/Seat offer VW quality underpinnings (if not trim) at a lower price.

Personally though, I'd just get a Polo if that's what you want and suggest your girlfriend just gets an automatic Fiesta*. Both perfectly good cars. I don't like autoboxes on small cars but they're no where near as bad as they used to be.

* Ford switched the Fiesta to a 6-speed autobox in 2011, so try and get one from that era or later, it'll make a big difference.

Good point on the underpinnings. You will probably also get a better trim level by going Seat Ibiza or Skoda Fabia.

Because MX-5s generally aren't owned by chavs and barry boys, or new drivers. Probably best avoiding light and RWD to start with though :)

lol. that is totally a lie :p

A TSI Golf the cheapest for insurance?! Clip his ear for being cheeky! The TSI's are quite nippy!

Stick him in a 1.0 Fiesta or Corsa and tell him to lump it like most others for their first cars :p (I had a 1.6 Focus, but that's not the point) :D

Thought I'd update this thread. Initial disclaimer, my son is 24 and daughter is 27 so not the same age as the OPs.

After my sons ramblings I decided to check myself using his details and sure enough for some insurance reason the 1.4 GT was cheaper to insure than the 1.4 TFSI SE or even the 1.2 and what was even more surprising is that the 2.0 GTI was even cheaper?

So as of yesterday my son is now the proud owner of a Mk7 2.0 GTI with all the bits, tax cost him a bit more, £135 as opposed to £30 for the road fund and insurance under his name with me, the wife and his older sister on came to £863 including legal cover. What knarks me is that that price is only £30 more than I pay to insure my wifes 1.33 Yaris where my wife is the main driver and me and my daughter and son are named drivers?

I think car insurance would explode a Vulcans brain as it's just not logical :D
