Thought you guys might enjoy this. The TL;DR is that we're renewing our tenancy as we do every January. The terms are, word for word, exactly the same as last year's. The fee for changing the dates? £210 for me, and £210 for the landlord. So now I'm in talks with them, getting them to explain why we have to pay £420 between us. I know the answer, they know the answer, but I want to hear them say it, the sadistic **** that I am. So far I've been punted on once and am awaiting a reply.

Will update and also paste in the whole email chain once this is concluded :)

Stop paying it and just let it to go a periodic tenancy, they might try and charge a fee for that but tell them to sod off as its your legal right.

If you are in contact with the landlord then as above see if they want to go direct or reassure them that you want to stay but the fees are ridiculous.

Oh make no mistake they're not getting a penny and I suspect they know it. I'm just a bar steward who wants to hear them admit that we're paying £420 between us for them to change a few dates on a contract.

(side note, I generally respect anyone earning an honest living, from street sweepers up to chartered accountants, but I absolutely despise estate agents, to me they're the bottom feeders of the human race, scrounging whatever they can and stiffing people at every opportunity. And yes, I tar them all the the same brush)

Could always go to the Landlord and suggest doing it direct?

I rent directly off mine.

Tried that a couple of years ago, no dice. Will try again this year (our landlord is Oprah rich, so a few hundys to let other people deal with this stuff is nothing to her)

We moved into our current rental property in summer 2006, since summer 2007, by default it went to a periodic tenancy.

If landlord wants us out, they must given two months notice.

If we want out, we must give one months notice.

Look forward to seeing the reply! Outrageous to charge that much! Minor admin change should be free given that they are getting a monthly fee as it is?

Last year when they renewed mine, they didn't even change the date on the contract - they charged me like £150 for the same piece of paper they provided me the year before.. scum bags.

I'm tempted to actually totally refuse to pay this time around, literally see how far I can get - I'm fed up of them taking money for absolutely nothing at all, something that's literally almost about to be banned.

I don't see the problem. They have to pay staff wages, utilities, and lease on their address so need to make money. I think OP admitted he works loads of overtime and basically sits on his arse all the time on forums and YouTube etc. He also gets people on OCUK to do his homework for him often posts if he has a tough decision to make. Sounds like he is just as bad, if not worse.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't pay £100 for a Mars bar from a corner shop, even if they have got to pay staff wages, utilities, and lease on their address.

So to summarise, your tenancy is up so you need to sign a new contact but are throwing a wobbly because they're charging you to sign a new contract? :p
