Lowest spec GPU to hit 144FPS at 1080p?

I bought a 144Hz 1080p monitor with Freesync, which is nae much use with the GTX 970 I'm using.

After getting screen tearing with new monitor, I now use Adaptive Sync at 72FPS which solved screen tearing and looks really smooth now.

However, I'd like to make the most of the refresh rate so would like something that can hit 144 FPS. I don't mind dumbing down some of the settings so for arguments sake I'm looking to hit 144 FPS, I'll use 1080p for the next couple years and don't mind dropping to medium/high'ish graphics settings on recent games if needs be.

The card would be paired with a 6700k @ 4.4 Ghz if that helps and I don't mind buying 2nd hand.

What would be the most suitable card to achieve this without breaking the bank? I'm thinking in the region of £350.

Thanks!

If it's to remove the screen tearing then just go for an AMD GPU, that way you can use the Freesync feature on your monitor. The 580 seems to be the only GPU in your budget so probably go for that. Seems all the Vega 56 GPUs are out of stock/expensive... The 580 should still provide some performance improvements compared to the 970 in terms of FPS.

get a 580 to use freesync would be my advice. freesync is great if you want smooth gameplay.

a 56 woulda been nice but as said prices is an issue and are just stupid now.

Basically what games mainly as my 1080ti hits 180fps in 4k on the games I play mostly and could use a 1060 for 144hz 1080. If you're happy to use med high settings a 1070ti should be ok for now. But if you play say warface or smite then a R9 290x will get you 100-150 FPS regularly.

I think you're out of luck, a 1080ti won't hit 144 fps in most titles.

At 1080p, really?

Sorry, should have said, Nividia only being considered. Personal preference.

Cheers, I'm hitting 90+ FPS in PUBG (not the most demanding, I know) with medium'ish setting at 1080p. Was hoping a 1060 might do the trick but a 1070Ti looks like the sweet spot for me but too much to drop at this stage. Would a GTX 1070 cut the mustard?

The 1060 is pretty much the same performance as the 970, if you're looking for 144Hz AAA now and especially to for some future proofing you will need a 1080Ti, yes even for 1080P

£350 just doesn't get you a lot these days, a 1060 is little more than a side grade, a 1070 is more than £350 and while a big step up from a 970 i can tell you as an owner of one of these is not a 144Hz card unless its older / less demanding games.

For £350 i wouldn't bother with the 1060, the RX 580 is the way to go if you already have a FreeSync screen.

Cheers guys, looks like the usual "hold on for 6 months" and see what happens with pricing of current cards when new releases are out/imminent.

The Freesync thing is a bit of a red herring for me, I bought the monitor as it was a great price. I never really thought Freesync would be used but then again, I didn't realise how bad 80/90 FPS on a 144Hz monitor with no sync'ing could look.

Then you should've got yourself a G-sync monitor if you want to stick with Nvidia :p. Freesync/G-sync will solve the screen tearing issue so you won't need to spend on a super expensive GPU that can do the highest refresh rate as the minimum FPS.

This is always bizarre to me. "I know that the competition makes a product that's better suited to my needs, but I refuse to buy it out of brand loyalty."

Pay the piper and buy a G-Sync monitor if you really want to pledge your allegiance. High framerate gaming is pretty rough without adaptive sync, even with a 1080 Ti. I'd rather lock to a lower framerate that I can hit 100% of the time than have it bouncing around with a choice between stuttering and screen tearing.

Nope.

I've swapped GPU makes plenty of times before and I simply cannot be bothered to do it again. Every time I've had to do a fresh Windows install to get rid of driver issues when swapping. I have better things to be doing than going through that again. Just need a plug and play solution.

As for Adaptive Sync, that's what I'm using at 72 FPS and it's perfectly smooth, I'd just like to try and use the 144Hz if I can without dropping stupid cash on an unneccessary high end GPU. I can wait, it's fine using Adaptive Sync at the moment.

For a start a 1060 is closer to a 980 than a 970, especially with modern titles, the gent said he is happy with some of the eye candy turned down, I suspect a 1070 will be fine for this purpose for a few years to go however with Volta possibly here soon i would hold of on such an old architecture. If you can wait 6 months do so, if you cannot then whatever you can afford from a 1060 6gb upwards will be an upgrade
In relative terms a 1060 is about 15% faster stock v stock (like a 980) and will go up to about 40% with a 2ghz boost clock compared to stock 970, if you overclocked the 970 then this is obviously lower
A 1070 is similar to a 980ti but a bit better depending on overclock, so a lot more than a 970

Well, not really. G-Sync were stupid prices and using Adaptive Sync has solved any screen tearing and there's no stuttering, never has been. I am a casual gamer, G-Sync would be complete overkill for me with current monitor and GPU prices.

I'll get more interested again once 4K (maybe 8K) OLED monitors with high refresh rates are more commonplace and the GPU's required to drive them don't cost so much.

I can't say I've ever had an issue changing from nVidia to AMD or vice versa, uninstall current driver, shut down PC, Remove old card, install new card, install driver, done.
Probably recommended to use DDU to completely remove the old driver, but I've never had too.

Seems odd to forego freesync for the sake of re-installing an OS, have you tried freesync/g-sync? hard to go back once you've experienced it, smooth as you like, no tearing and low latency.

A 580 won't even give 60 FPS maxed out at 1080p in most newer games, don't know why it's being suggested. Freesync or not, especially over a GTX 970. It's just burning money.

Buy nothing unless you're able to get a Vega 56 cheap or 1070/Ti.
