Potential for making a bit of money, clearing out my loft.

Hello,

I am currently having a huge clear out of my loft and was wondering whether it might be worth trying to make a bit of money in the process.

Recent reviews by Ebay sellers has put me off using it as it seems to be so biased towards buyers (plus the apparent time it takes to take photos, write description etc).

Are there any alternatives that I might consider for any of the following:

* Computer Games/CDs/DVDs
* Computer Parts
* Electronic Devices
* Designer clothes (some unworn, with labels still on).
* Non-designer clothes (again, some with labels still on).
* Furniture
* Books
* Textbooks

Any general advice would be much appreciated.

Take the negative press with eBay with a pinch of salt. I've been trading on there as a seller for over a decade and have had zero issues.

Having said that for games/CDs/DVDs I'd go with CeX/Music Magpie for convenience, especially if they're not rare or collectable.

For the books/textbooks:

Furniture is best to go Facebook marketplace or Gumtree as said above.

Local Facebook marketplace
or
Gumtree

This tbh, if you can handle the time and energy for people to come around to see stuff and then haggle. Items for sale are so poorly presented and photographed on these two sites that it is easy to make your own stuff stand out as quality.

AVforums for techie bits and games as they have decent classified with a wide range of high and low end buyers.

Gumtree/facebook for furniture because shipping is awkward

eBay for books/textbooks/clothing with clothing sent signed delivery if expensive. Books are not usually scammed

Charity shop for anything that isn't worth more than a few bob

A colleague of mine de-cluttered his house a year or so ago and listed everything on Schpock. He did so well out of it that he now buys job lots on ebay or local car boot sales then splits and resells the items on there and makes a worthwhile profit.

Thanks for the link - I've hoarded loads of text books (read: all) from GCSE and A Level.

Just ebay, none of that stuff appears to be too high value, and most buyers are alright. I have noticed that some of them now seem to think they should receive the same level of treatment in terms of customer service as if they had purchased from a shop though, probably due to the influx of high street names using the platform.

I still rate it for low level items though, much more time efficient than dealing with people on Facebook in my experience.

Ebay for me.

I don't have much luck with gumtree, Facebook etc. Usually people message then just stop. For me ebay is less hassle. And that's enough

Im going to be taking apart and selling my gaming pc, HTpc and selling dslr. It'l a be going on ebay I suspect

I've sold loads of random stuff on ebay.

Generally got on fine and I will keep using it.

Anything expensive and I'll only offer collection with cash.

If I lose something to a scam it's a risk you take.

My girlfriend has over 1k feedback on eBay, she rarely if ever has any issues. Obviously it can happen but it seems blown out of proportion on here.

Shpock is a waste of time, full of idiots that seem unable to read info in the ads and businesses now.

As for eBay I'd simply get all the listings ready and hit the list button when theres a £1 final value affair goign on or one of the others that minimises the cost it takes to sell.

Thanks everyone - really appreciate your comments.

I think I will give Ebay a try after all then.

Do you have any general tips as to what not to sell on there (i.e. anything that should go straight to the tip, charity shop or offered to websites that specifically buy items)?

Also, I assume it is a good idea to check on Ebay to see whether a particular has sold before and for how much? If it has only sold for a few quid, I would imagine that that is also an item that is probably not worth bothering with.
