Just back from visiting family for Christmas and my Asus RT-AC68U appears to have died whilst I've been away. I was having lots of dropouts recently (Plusnet) so it could explain that, especially as PN said everything was fine their end.

The good news is that this gives me the opportunity to buy something new and shiny! I'm looking for something similar to the AC68U, I live in a newish build house and wifi was never a problem with this router. I do like the Merlin software but there are several new Asus ones out and I'm not sure which to go for. I'm not going to restrict myself to Asus though so any recommendations welcome. Looking to spend up to £250 for the right one.

How do you mean it's died?

As in no longer alive :)

No lights, nothing. Tried another power supply from my mate's Asus router (same model) and still the same. Got an old netgear on at the moment so at least I can get on the web etc.

£250 jesus is that how much a good one costs these days. I am looking for one myself, wasnt prepared to spend anywhere near that much though

The top ones aren't cheap but I'm still looking. Still using my old Netgear one I used years ago and it's doing the job so might just stick with it until I see one on sale. It's pretty basic but I never really used all the options on the Asus.

Asus RT-ac86u, which is a replacement for the 68u, is meant to be a decent router. I personally use a 88u, both are within your budget and both can run the Merlin firmware.

There's also the Netgear R7800, which is highly rated on SNBForums.

The Synology RT2600AC is a decent router, this is also very highly rated on SNBForums. I've got a few at work in small offices and they are 100% problem free.

I need it to be DSL, so the RT are no good for me I need ASUS DSL.
What about the ASUS DSL-AC55U, been recommended it on another site. Any good?

Unifi..
USG = £100 (1 port router)
8 port switch = £100
Acces point = £75

That's a great route (no pun intended)

Or if you want an all in one, look at Mikrotik

Same here, no requirement for AP's in my house. I get a strong enough signal throughout my house with just a router.

Well it’s a computer enthusiast’s forum so those hanging around the networking section might have a few devices. Your comment prompted me to look at my DHCP leases since I’ve moved to one of the suggested over the top solutions after my ISP provided router couldn’t cope. I have 49 devices on my network. You’d be surprised by the time you throw in some phones, tablets, echos, smart plugs, IPTV boxes, smart TVs etc. And getting coverage over 300sqm needed separate access points in good locations.

Of course it may still be overkill but people are just pointing out what the best is for the generous £250 budget I think and it’s worth knowing because if you’re asking the question you probably don’t realise that separates generally gives significantly better performance than an all in one.
