Buying a 10 year old BMW 123d?

Wow 7.8k on a near 11yr old 1 series  I could think of better cars to spend that kind of money on. What is it about the 1 series coupe that meets your requirements?

I thought £4.5k for a 13 year old BMW was an alright price, compared to this 1 series it looks the bargain of the century. Bearing in mind mine is also a Z4 with a 3 litre straight six and this a 4 pot tractor engined hatchback...

See that’s justifiable because the Z4 is what you would consider a fun sporty Coupe with a proper 3.0 v6 engine and good power to match.
But the 1 series/1 series Coupe is for the most part a bottom rung model and normally widely available in poverty spec because that’s what the majority of people who want to say they have a “BMW Coupe” specced on the cheapest monthly payment plan opt for. As long as it looks sporty with its big wheels and M badges everywhere most don’t care it’s only a diesel 4 banger because they want mega mpgzzzz and low tax which is why they are probably still ridiculously overpriced on the used market compared to something with a proper engine like your Z4. People like to appear they are living the champagne lifestyle without the running costs

Is that not pretty much the same engine as found on an Alpina D3 though? I'm sure it's really not as terrible as your all making out.

The Alpina D3 is the most disappointing car Alpina have ever made.

It's just a reasonably powerful 4 cylinder diesel. Useful when new, an unrefined and noisy liability when 10 years old.

Got to say.. from my 5 years with mine I would consider another and totally recommend them.

Quite a turnaround, I started out with a few issues but 5 years and something like 120k later (I'm on 168k now) I'm astonished by how well it's held up.. It's a 59 plate and I hammer it.. 24k in the last 8 months. Somehow still going, never not worked.. the only money I've had to spend on repairs was £800 about 10k ago for the inlet manifold and it came back faster and more economical than before so I can live with that :)

I'd love a grey coupe with red leather.. I might just do that when this one eventually dies but I am expecting to go well over 200k.. I always planned to change it but now I've paid it off the challenge is to make it go as long as possible :)

I'm sure it getting a regular 150 mile round trip commute is actually helping it.

I ended up test driving a 330i coupe today. Beautiful engine. Car was in stunning condition for its age (56 plate / 70k). I'm just trying to justify to myself that a 12 year old car can be worth £7500, then I'm quite tempted to push buy.

As soon as something breaks you'll regret it.

£7k would get you Leon Cupra or Golf GTI. Cheaper to repair, service and insure.

No it's not 2.5k more like £800. And four figure repairs. Geez you have been up Fox's bum for way too long.

Replacing a chain is expensive but unlike a belt it isn't a service item and is intended to last the life of the car. Chain replacement is not a typical bill.

And both replied go figure

That's very observant of you. Here, have a lolly.

What other major bills can a 330/335i produce? I’ve often looked at the older 3 series Coupe models as I like naturally aspirated engines and they will obviously be a nicer car interior and quality wise compared to other sub 8k cars like hot hatches etc. I thought these were strong engines compared to the problamitc 318/320i of that era?

Op it sounds slightly overpriced but not by much and is still a better choice than the diesel 1 series for similar money.
