Weird phone call on Mother's mobile.

There I am sitting on the sofa around my parents house when my Mother gets a call on her mobile. The caller asks for me by name, my full name and not the shortened version I use literally everywhere and have done forever. So my Mother hands me her phone and I get a heavily accented Indian woman "Hello *insert my name*, are you having a good day? I just need.....' and then the call disconnects.

How is this possible? I'm not named on any paperwork in relation to my Mother's PAYG phone and the electoral register has my correct address, but I'm not on the publicly accessible register. Not to mention that it's freaked my Mother out as she's worried about how they knew I was around their house.

The number that called is: 02038969798

Your mum or someone else with you number probably has their contacts list shared or leaked online.

I keep getting calls (auto blocked) from 02038 numbers to one of my numbers due to a colleague having their contacts breached in some way - probably because they gave some dodgy app or site permissions (or a "legit" site that has had its data breached) :s

They've found you. You could try running but I doubt it will do any good. It might buy you a few days, maybe even a few weeks but ultimately they will get you.

Have you had an accident in the past linked to that address or have you been named as a passenger in an accident?

Could just be coincidence that you happened to be around when they called, that or they have your mums house wired

No, not been named in an accident of any shape or form and neither have my parents too. So yeah, guess it's time to sweep their house for bugs. :D

What, calls to their mobile number asking for you by a version of your name that you don't use?

Whoops, I meant to the landline, but with Indian accent and hang up pretty quick, not mobile though. I guess OP must have entered his mob number online somewhere, even fb. Don't they sell our info to advertisers?

Can't be too sinister as they would have hid their number.

I don't use Facebook and my parents don't even have the internet. The only mobile number I have ever entered online is my own when ordering stuff, but that doesn't explain how they phoned my Mother's mobile asking for me by name.

Could be some hardcore data mining going on?

Pretty freaky though. Why not phone them back and ask them?

EDIT: Phone them back and scam bait them, get some info as to why they knew your mums number etc.

These ******* keep ringing me, ambulance chasers.

on the rare occasion one of these clowns knows my name i give them absolute hell on the phone, at the very least it gets you black marked as a trouble maker. otherwise just hang up and block the number.

More and more of these pesky cold callers are ignoring the legally-binding TPS regulations. Does anyone recommend an app that is database-based i.e. a human-edited blacklist that people can submit rogue numbers to? At the moment, I use Calls Blocker Pro where you can ban number ranges i.e. 0845 666 8XXX where 8XXX is 8000 to 8999, but eventually the ambulance chasers will call from other numbers so it's only effective for so long.
