Not sure but it’s one of three reasons I didn’t buy one even at the special launch price.
Power and performance were the other two.
I guess you have all been under a rock?
They are better for mining crypto currency.
To do that takes months, during that time the bubble that's crypto currency could burst and AMD would be left lots of unsold inventory. If they're selling so well they should produce more cards.

It just about competes with a GTX 1080 yet costs £200 more? I don't get it.
They done what you suggested when Bitcoin was being mined using GPU's several year ago, when ASIC miners started coming online GPU mining become redundant and AMD end up having to take a charge of about $40m as they have to write down the value of it's stocks of 290/290X's GPU's as Nvidia had just lunched the GTX 970 which was a lot cheaper. Once bitten, twice shy as they say. They've been out for months already, mining isn't a new thing.
People keep blaming it on mining but its not really is it. Supply and demand is a thing but ultimately someone along the line, the retailer probably, is being very greedy. Are AMD charging more for them just because of mining? Seems a bit crazy if they are.
It's not the retailer in this case. Miners are buying in bulk directly from the manufacturer.
But the retailer prices are what we are talking about?
Because the manufacturers are selling to miners at high prices, they aren't going to sell to Retailers for less, especially when stock is so low. It's a knock on affect.
So AMD selling bulk directly to miners? That confirmed as definite? Just stupid.
It sounds as though the manufacturers/AMD are causing the problem for quick gain. Don't sell them in bulk to someone who isn't a registered retailer or something similar.
