Brass Eye - 20 Years

Inspired by the thread, watched the special episode again last night. Some of it was absolute genius, particularly the crabs :D

In fairnes some of it was a bit insensitive, admittedly - the bits where the joke wasn’t the media but was just going for absurd / surreal humour, which is the sort of humour I love but the subject matter is a bit touchy. Specially, the bit where a ‘victim’ has to speak through a troll and rubs her breasts on camera to demonstrate how disturbed she was. Perhaps that was an intelligent / subtle joke about the media making paedophilia a titilating subject... but not sure they would broadcast that today!

There is no way you would be allowed to broadcast some of the content the Brass Eye did on TV now. People would go nuts. Even back in the 90s it got taken off air because feeble people got offended or took it seriously.
You can’t back up that position in any way, except by your desire to believe that the world is so full of terminally offended people.

Wasn't it Brass Eye that coined the Good AIDS v Bad AIDS thing? That absolutely epitomises the media and how they'll cherry pick a cause based on celebrity endorsement. Utterly insincere, and Brass Eye just fired a torpedo right through it all. Brilliant. :p

Brass Eye remains one of the greatest comedy shows ever committed to film. Not to sound old, but you really don't get shows like that anymore.

You really can't get shows like Brass Eye anymore as a lot of broadcasting guidelines were changed in the wake of the Paedo-geddon episode.

It's so strange to watch Sky News or Fox nowadays as it's so similar to some of the stuff on Brass Eye. I remember seeing something on Sky News last year where a reporter when in to a church with a camera and declared "If I were a terrorist I could have killed them all".

It is, have you seen social media? Being offended by everything seems to be a current trend.

Lets not forget that the Brass Eye was taken off air because people got offended...

People were offended by Brass Eye, especially the pedophile special. The right-wing presss tried their best to get it taken off air and questions were asked in parliament.

It was still aired and then repeated. And, arguably, there’s far more offensive shows on TV today.

Like what?

Like what?

Pretty much anything adult and animated (South Park, Archer, Family Guy) or anything on Sky Atlantic.

Brass Eye might have tackled controversial subjects but its content was never actually all that offensive. People took offensive without ever watching it (as an MP who campaigned against it had to admit).

Dead pan spoof documentary is my favourite comedy style by far. Check out "This is David Lander" for an even earlier example of this, with Stephen Fry.

The Prestadidwicks Congena skit was one of the highlights of Brass Eye for me, you could just imagine Donald Trump coming down with this at some point in the not distant future. Also, there should definitely be a "Ted Maul Investigates" spin off, Chris Morris is probably old enough now to do him without any ageing make up.

Headmaster suspended for using big faced child as satellite dish lol. London underground closed due to an infestation of horses.

I really miss the total madness of the random news stories.

Was it Brass Eye that after the then controller of Channel 4, Michael Grade got the hump about it, stuck a 1 frame subliminal flash of "Michael Grade is a ****" at the end of the show?

Never got the chance to see Brass Eye. Was it quite controversial? Just wondered because my old workplace from around year 2000 had these public folders set up in MS Outlook. Basically they were newsgroups in threaded view so that employees used them as a forum. You could hold debates, discuss TV and music, and there was a buy/sell folder as well. The folder that was monitored most by line managers was the debate one (called the Soapbox). There was a thread about Brass Eye and 2 employees that posted in there got sacked. Didn't read all of the posts in there, but it came up in our next team meeting warning all of us to be careful when posting in the public folders.
