so I’m looking at a new motor soon. Set myself a budget of 7k

Just used for a commute to work and back. 35 miles a days, 80% of that on a motorway.

Ideally newer the better (2012 onwards is what I’ve been looking at)

Want something that’s not going to cost a ton to run ie petrol, tax etc.

If you were in this position is there anything specific you would look for?

Like the idea of a 1 series bmw but was put off by reading about timing chain issues and the bmw thread here put me off.

Fiesta st would be nice but I think they are out of the price range. A zetec s isn’t though.

Looked at seat ibiza’s Can get a decent spec 64 plate for sub 7000

Considered a fiat 500 but I think they are a bit small

Focus. Going to be a fair bit more comfortable than the Fiesta/Ibiza. Parts are never going to break the bank.

The problem with the bigger cars is having to go poverty spec or high miles.

I know high miles shouldn’t be off putting provided the history backs it up but something with low milage (as new as possible) would be better no?

My current fiesta I must admit isn’t giving me any trouble. (Speedo sensor needs replacing) and has 88k on the clock.

I wouldn’t want to change to something with more miles on.

The more I think of it the more I think a new car isn’t needed (literally my car is only used to go to work and back) but I guess its just that I’ve had it a while now and want something different.

I can do 2 weeks on a full tank so about 350(probably closer to 300) and that’s driving like a granny as I don’t see the point in ragging a 1.25fiesta as I ain’t exactly going to break any land speed records in it.

you can get a Focus 1.0 eco-boost Titanium spec, under 50K miles for under 7k on Autotrader
If your not bothered about spec, Zetec a lot less, and lower mileage

Is this purely for the commute or is it a family bus too? (if you have one) because if you don't need more than two seats this opens up a world of possibilities!

Another vote for the Focus 1.0 eco-boost Titanium spec. Looked at these previously and was surprised with the 1.0 engine. Spec also helps.

Fiesta Eco Boost?
paid £7.1k for my ecoboost 13 plate 16k on the clock i think. Great little car and the 0 tax is an added bonus.

I would if i could roll back time get the version with cruise control and 16 inch wheels, but that's just personal preference.

As for ooomph it's a pokey little car around teh city with enough power to overtake on A roads safely, it's by no means quick but it's not a slouch for a small engined car. It sounds alright from inside the car but less impressive outside lol.

As a side note, It averages 35mpg in the town 55 mpg combined is right if your journey heavily favors 60 mph A road with no need to change to gear. If like me you're a 3 mile drive through a town then the economy is kind of lost.
