M.2 worth it over SSD?

@hornetstinger idk mate, personally I cannot go back to using a hdd for anything other than media files. For MMOGs at least, ssds do make a large difference
I want to slit my wrist everytime I need to boot up a computer at work :(

also not all games are ready for multi core processors either so having all the cores but no where to use them in gaming anyway

But we're not talking about CPU's.

SSD's are fast, but low capacity, expensive per GB.

Sure if I had unlimited money get as many of these your motherboard SATA controllers have

But bit more sensible, I'd get a 250GB SSD for OS then a WD 2TB Black for games

i know but you were talking about games , also if money was no object then why not get that https://www.overclockers.co.uk/sams...-3.0-x4-nvme-solid-state-drive-hd-22l-sa.html

Would need new motherboard, X58 system? Or PCI board or something not sure not looked into it.
Plus a £1k it's absurd.

I think a flight sim can't remember the name but loading on that was horrid on HD, so I'd definiely use a SSD. It had tens of thousands of files so guess reason why. But for everything else, few seconds for better GB per £...stay with regular HD.

Differences is minor at best, I probably wouldn’t have noticed any difference if I wasn’t looking for it.

yeah I wouldn't go by benchmarks and millisecond tests, I'd want to see humanly noticeable differences. SSD is already very fast, if you're going to shave off 1 ms off boot or when you load applications, it's not worth x? the price.

My m.2 ssd died and I am kinda glad. No performance difference but windows updates didn't work, pcie cards needed shuffling and it eventually cooked itself to death. Samsung sm951 with a heatsink.

I think we are getting confused here maybe

m.2, think of it as a form factor. 2.5", 3.5", m.2 etc etc

Some m.2 sockets just live on the SATA interface giving no speed benefit over their 2.5" peers. Some m.2 sockets also support access via the PCIe bus, when coupled with a PCIe m.2 SSD and the often faster flash they use they perform much much faster. This comes at a increase in cost though and I doubt you'd notice the speed increase unless you host massive databases

Some m.2 sockets are SATA interface only
Some m.2 sockets are PCIe interface only
Some are both (though only 1 interface can be used concurrently)

Given the same SSD, the performance is the same wether in m.2 SATA or 2.5" SATA formats.....

Yeah there's m.2 sata and m.2 pcie-nvme, and also, within pcie spec, some boards only have 1 lane, other have 4 lanes. All very confusing :p

Currently have a 1TB SSD with Windows and my games on it.

Got an upgrade itch but don't fancy paying DDR4 prices for a full new rig. How about an M.2? Just for the OS. Would I notice a big difference over my SSD? And is it easy to transfer Win 10 to the M.2 while keeping steam and everything else on the SSD?

I had a 1TB firecuda ssd for my windows and for general storage like steam etc and my windows took around about a minute to load I was getting frustrated with especially as it was just a new build (probably didn’t help I only had 200gb free) but I picked up a refurbished 250gb Samsung evo 850 for £60 of the auction site and done a fresh install of windows, deleted a few old games off the big drive plus the old windows install, and now I have a windows loading time of around 5-10 seconds which I am more than happy with. It’s on and waiting before I even change the source to hdmi2 on my tv for me I would say It was worth it.
I also have a m.2 ssd in my laptop (it came with it) and windows load times have always been fast, longs I just use It for OS it will stay fast. I’ve noticed if i do install programs on to it, they usually sneak into the windows startup and slows loading times. Just have to disable them.

You can tell the difference between m.2 SATA and m.2 NVME by looking at the pin layout. Just like with PCI and PCI-E.

m.2 NVME is what you need to see the speed difference from SATA.
