Hmm.....I live in Widnes.........so you are thinking Irlam...Warrington (center of motorway universe) Widnes...Hale...Speke...Garston.....Liverpool. If you fall in the water you will dissolve. May I make a suggestion. Rather than this industrial trek with the risk of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, The Pusher, drowning, mild to moderate abuse for being a Manc increasing as you approach L,pool...possible kidnap and worse....... would you consider the following........get the train to Liverpool and have a great day out! But try this:
From Oxford Road you can get the train to Frodsham station which is the northern start of the Sandstone trail (it starts at a monument at the Bears Paw pub).
From Picadilly, you can get the train to Delamere Forest station (ice cream, coffee, tea, there is now a campsite and more squirrels than you can shake a mobile at). From Delamere you can walk north to Frodsham in a few hours...and either walk back or get a cab back to Delamere.
From Delamere station, it is one stop west to Mouldsworth and the Goshawk Pub which has brilliant food and ale! Keep going on the train from here and you reach Chester.
From Frodsham, you walk south to Delamere...on the Sandstone trail in countryside following a vague trail....use proper maps and a compass.....you go down to Beeston Castle, to the Pheasant Inn a wicked country pub set on a hill with brilliant countryside....you could stealthily wild camp if you wanted or camp with permission somewhere or book a room at the Pheasant Inn (it gets busy so book it early).
To complete the route you can walk to Whitchurch. But I would not bother. I suggest tinkering around the Pheasant Inn area South to Raw head (along an ace wide ridge with views and cliff edges to push mates off) and down to explore the hill at Bickerton (Mad Alan's cave) then retrace your steps and return north to Delamere and Frodsham - it is the best bits.
The rest of it south from Bickerton is as flat as a witches-tit, it is the Cheshire plains, and a bore fest after what you have just experienced.
The northern 2/3 of the Sandstone trail has a few canals thrown in. It is hands down much prettier and natural than your proposed industrial trek and there is only mild jeopardy (mild risk of abuse by squirrels, horses, cows, bulls, landlord/landowner).

If you want any more info happy to help. Trans pennine trail sounds interesting. If you are feeling very adventurous have a think about the West Highland Way! But pick your time...June....early September? Think tourists, insects......
