320D M sport goes back to the lease company...

yeah i doubt i'd keep it with over 100k miles to be honest :S

looking at second hand cars per month is about the same cost as a new one really it's madness i could get a brand new A220D AMG line with all the toys for £350 a month or a second hand 15 plate 330d M Sport for about £300

A class is being replaced imminently, and the current range is pretty pants, especially if you compare the interiors/toys to the newer C/E class.

If you are doing high mileage, then you'l struggle to get a cheap lease, are you sure you don't want to just stick to a company car, far less hassle with your mileage?

This is a fairly flawed statement really.

Firstly £350 and £300 are not ‘the same per month’.

Secondly a 330d M Sport and an A220 are different cars with different prices – one is a mid to high end 3 Series the other is a base A Class, a smaller car from a lower class.

An A220 AMG Line is £29500 new, a 330d M Sport is £39490 new.

A 15 plate 330d is about £20k from a dealer. With a £6k deposit and £300 a month for 48 months you’d OWN this car after 48 months, it would belong to you and have a value of perhaps £10k.

Meanwhile the £300 a month A Class gets handed back and you are left with nothing at all.

It sounds like you really need to do some homework to understand how all this works because making statements like ‘A new car costs the same as a used car’ because a 2015 330d has similar monthly payments to a brand new A Class is just completely flawed and misleading.

I do a very similar commute to you (130 miles per day, or around 30k per annum) and i think the best compromise is a used ~£15k premium car of some description. Depreciation isnt too bad at this level. My current one (An E-Class E350 AMG Sport Convertible) had mid 60s miles on it at purchase, if you TCO it right the way to say 200k miles (as accurately as possible) it is much cheaper than a lease for an equivalent (albeit newer) vehicle. A private lease on the new equivalent of this vehicle is around £4000 down and then £700inc VAT per month.

Company cars are a boneheaded way of doing things, you end up in a low end car due to BIK requirements, and they cost an absolute fortune in lost allowance and tax.

yeah true! i couldn't afford a new 330d M Sport :S good point

I wish i could keep the company car but I'm changing jobs and they don't have them

Have you had a look at carwow prices? The 3s are still discounted 20-28% with heavily subsidised APRs still at 1.9%. The low BMW APRs save thousands over typical HP rates on approved.

Have a play on PCPcal.co.uk and see the difference all the figures make esp the APRs.

Based on my current carwow offer which has been updated by bidding dealers on a 330d msport auto, the discounted price is £30k. Running it through on PCPcal it's £30k purchase, £12k residual (dealer supplied value on 10k miles pa X 48 months), £6k deposit and on a 48month agreement it's £278 per month with only £1383 in interest charged.

You can change this to a 36 month and it stays virtually the same (£281pm) as residuals increased accordingly.

The APR is so low compared to approved used which is typically 10.9 and lowest I haggled was 5.9 it's savings big money.

For the above example car on 48months it changed to £340pm and £4k interest on 5.9% and £418pm and £8090 interest at 10.8%.

30K purchase, means committing to buying it though since the OP will be doing way more than 10K miles PA.

It all becomes a bit 'moon on a stick really'

For example if the OP wants a 320d m sport these can be had considerably cheaper new as discount percentages aren't dissimilar. The approved used values are favourable too assuming personal loan.

Not a bad car either just not quite the same performance as the 30d.

Ha, made me chuckle, and I agree. Quite a few people want the moon on a stick these days, but want to pay 40p for it. Realistically, having £20K to spend over 4 years for a car that you need/will put over 100K miles on, leaves you with second hand fully owned as the only option. Or face it, and buy a Ford Focus and run it in to the ground from new, if you want a warranty, and reasonably fixed costs for those 4 years and beyond. Like you say though, grabbing a great deal on the 320D M Sport might be a good call, nearly new for 20K.

So I've today bought a 64 plate 25k miles 330D M Sport xDrive (Manufacturer Approved with all the toys) with 3 year warranty for £21k! with a low APR loan and saved a load of cash, happy days! the 330D engine is amazing compared to the 320D I cant wait to pick it up :)

Very good choose there. The xdrive seem to offer better value on the approved used as well. That's a good price.

Why do people say 'all the toys' when they don't mean it :p

I can't see surround view fitted or a sunroof.. :p

May have a boot full of the Legos, who knows!

I'm quite happy it felt better to drive than the 320D but that'll be the smoother power delivery i guess? when i say toys all the ones i need! Xenon Headlights, Front & Rear Parking Sensors, Heated auto dimming folding mirrors, Harmon Kardon stereo, Sports Auto with paddles, headlight washers, MSport brakes, 19" alloys and Sun protection glass

It’s a figure of a speech, people use it all of the time to summarise their new car. It means they are not boring people with a long list of equipment when talking about it.

It seems to be used with cars that have standard options, with maybe a couple of additions. It's always been the same though, central locking and electric windows make a car 'fully loaded' to some! Quite amusing.
