Ikea Besta TV unit - remove back panel?

:( Well I've ordered a junior hacksaw. Can't decide whether to cut a big ol' hole in the back then, or something smaller for the fans to fit. Hmn. This is Sunday's job...

Can anyone recommend a nice double fan plate combo thing? Looked at some but they were quite expensive...

Well actually thinking logically.. I need to remove the back because the unit is too deep for the cables sticking out the back of the receiver. So actually I can't install fans, as I need the cables to be able to poke out..

Take the measurements of the rear of the receiver and cut out a rectangle big enough so the back of the amp will hang through.

That's my plan now I've seen sense about fans. Like duh I need to cut a hole to allow for the cables hanging out the back, so err no I can't put fans there instead :o

I might see how it goes like that but I've already suggested to the girlfriend that the next step is to drill some holes through the middle shelf (it's on the bottom) to allow air to escape upwards away from it.

just take the middle shelf up to its max , use the space for remotes and drill the vent holes just below the shelf , if i get chance tonight ill try and take a few pics of mine (although it's a different unit ..still ikea tho)

This is the Sr5012 no ? (the chromecast discussion)

but if i was sticking a HTPC in i would use a 120mm hole cutter and fit a couple of fans
apparently it takes 650W so could be dissipating more heat than an htpc and need similar ventilation - low inlet plus higher outlet holes ... probably some obligation for the warranty ?

Yep it's the SR5012. Can't see any recommendations from Marantz but feel free to prove me wrong. Not sure what you mean by the second part of your post?

I cut a hole in the back of mine just bigger than the amp. This allowed ventilation and also for the cables to stick out the back.

I'd recommend against removing it completely as it gives the unit sideways rigidity to stop it from collapsing. If you do remove it completely I'd suggest adding L shaped metal brackets to the side or some form of cross bracing across the back.

I'd consider replacing the back panel with something like the punctured MDF panels used to cover radiators.

That will keep the rigidity, allow plenty of ventilation through the whole unit, and make cutting holes for cables etc easier.

That's a really good shout. Something like pegboard would work really well. Might steal that idea for my next TV unit!
