Air conditioning is sexist

I have too, it is called the UK summer and it last for about 2 weeks a year... again we live in the UK, maybe Cornwall is a bit hotter but it is still the UK, the vast majority of the time the aircon is not brining the temperature down relative to the outside.
No Cornwall is not hotter than in-land. The sea regulates our temperatures so we neither have extremes of cold or heat.

You're telling me honestly that, in your experience, the inside of an office is always hotter than the outside? We've worked in very different places then.

I've not said that at all, I've pointed out quite clearly that sometimes the aircon is working hard to keep it cool in summer time but that those constitute relatively few days compared to all the days where the outside temp is somewhat lower than 22 degrees.

I’m happy anywhere between 15-25c but the girls at work moans if it’s 23c.

It’s the same everywhere I’ve worked.

The last place was the worst, they would moan so much in the morning the heating will be on but it is not intelligent or fast react enough with the increase in computer heat and heat from the windows, the office becomes 30c! I actually have a photo of a thermometer at work at that temp.

If only they would just accept it when it was 22c in the morning when they first get it because eventually it’ll warm up after 200 people turn up and fire up their PCs.

She should go and work in a few of the offices I’ve worked in. She won’t have a problem with the temperature as the heat from the workstations overpower the ability of the AC to cool the room.

That's great and all, but I never stipulated that the office temp had to be 22 degrees?

We cool ours down a fair bit below that. So there's about 4 months according to your chart where the indoor temp is lower than outdoors.

And like I also said, in winter it's normal for the heating to be on full blast for some with the windows wide open on the other side of the room for others.

Wasteful and stupid.

It is the temperature being talked about in the video/OP, what I was commenting on when you quoted me!

cool story but I don't see how that is relevant to my post... just to clarify I wasn't talking about the specific office you work in where apparently windows are open and heaters are on - is there some misunderstanding in Cornwall about how AC works? (you generally close the windows and don't need to use heaters either!)

And they want women to serve on the front line as equals to their male counterparts!!
Oh, HANG ON!!
I CAN'T GO OVER THERE BECAUSE IT'S A BIT CHILLY AND THEY ARE SHOOTING AT ME!!
I need special treatment so I will go to the press!!

I'm aware of that. Her argument is that if it's 22 outside you should let the office heat up to 22 so its consistent. Not unreasonable.

Instead we actively try to fight the seasons and maintain somewhere around 17 all year round.

You're being deliberately obtuse.

I was talking about wasted energy. In summer that's using AC to lower the temp, in winter that's turning the heating up when the windows are all open. And it all stems around people not reaching consensus on what temp we should settle on, and trying to fight the seasons with heating or AC, instead of changing our behaviour. In other words, wearing less in summer (no trousers and suits/ties in summer, no sleeveless frocks in winter).

You know what, forget about it. Nothing will ever change anyhow. The planet is ****ed anyway.

Love all of the responses, thanks :)

Didn't people used to live in caves? Presumably some were women?

Especially this one. Hell, even during the inter-war period (less than 100 years ago), people of both sexes lived without oil or gas as a utility.

Well if a guy can wear shorts and a t-shirt then fair enough but if they're restricted to trousers (even in summer) and a proper shirt etc.. (perhaps even a tie in some cases) then they're not really about to adjust.

This too. Office environment. Trousers, shirt (and tie too), smart shoes for the guys. Girls can wear just about anything including sandals in the summer time. Just not jeans etc obv.

nope, she's talking about the aircon being set to 22... not 17 - we're not taking about your crazy Cornish office with windows open and heaters on, I was commenting on the OP.

You quoted me when I pointed out that she could wear a jumper and talked about wasting energy - my post had nothing to do with windows being left open and heaters on... as has already been pointed out to you the outside temperature in the UK is generally lower than 22... having a cooler office generally uses less energy, raising the temperature above 22 as the woman in the video would like will generally use more energy (aside from, as already pointed out, the few days in summer where the temperature outside is vaguely warm)

set it to 21°C all year round, anyone who feels cold at that temperature can shut up, put on a jumper and quit trying to ruin it for everyone else.

any other answer than above is wrong

I've just listened to the video again... they don't mention 22 degrees or in fact give any specific temperature at all.

Guess I need to Google this as I'll I'm going by is the conversation in the video... one woman talks about "freezing" aircon and the other talks about being colder inside than outside.

So where 22 degrees keeps coming from I guess I don't know.

you've read the OP where he specifically mentioned 22 degrees and you've watched the video with the title:

"Sexist air conditioning: The Telegraph's Radhika Sanghani explains why the standard office temperature of 22°C is too low for most women."

but you don't know where 22 degrees is coming from????

Yet you're trying to straw man me with some bizarre anecdotes about how you work in an office (where it is seemingly set to 17) where windows are opened and heaters turned on etc..

You're surely mistaken.

OP says 22 degrees but the video doesn't...?? The video is titled "Why office air conditioning is sexist". Where did you get your title from? I'm looking at it and there is no 22 degrees in the YT video title.

The two girls in the conversation (listened to it twice) do not mention ANY temperature specifically. So apart from OP and you repeating 22 degrees, I still don't know where it's come from??!

Where the heck did you get that title with the Telegraph bit in it? I'm genuinely puzzled because this makes no sense from where I'm sitting.

e: nm, found it. Was using the embedded player not opening it in YT. It's not the video title you're referring to but the video description. So yeah, since I played it in a small embedded player and just listened to the audio I saw/heard no mention of 22 degree, except from you and OP. Oh well.

And if you listen to them talking neither mentions any temperature.

I went on a course a few years ago at the start of may.

Accomodation was provided, got in there and thought **** me this place is well insulated, it was 45 degrees in the room and about 20 at most outside.

Turned out each rooms radiator was on, no temp control and red hot, same in every room. Opening windows made some difference but it didn't drop below 35. Complained the next day as it was unbearable and got the best answer ever.

'people were complaining it was too cold in winter so now we leave the heating on all year round'

The whole context of it is that 22 degrees is supposedly too cold, that's the reason they've invited her on! This is an old news story, I remember seeing it previously... the woman in the video is the telegraph journalist, the original paper outlined how women would prefer to be 2.5 degrees warmer - circa 24-25degrees

if you click on the video you'll see the description I quoted

Yeah I've seen it now. I never click the links, always use the embedded player. Did wonder why everyone was hung up about 22 degrees... Should perhaps have put 2+2 together, maybe. It's late.

Well I have to say in that case 22 degrees is not cold - with high humidity it can be downright unpleasant. Definitely starting to enter t-shirt territory.

If they honestly are referring to 22 degrees as "cold" and "freezing", then, well, sucks to be them.
