Looking at getting one of these cards but cant make my mind up on which one.

Does anyone here have this card and is it up to much? Not a massive gamer will prob just play some older game like quake 3 if anything. Also is it compatible with my older setup (sig)

These are the 3 cards i am shortlisted to :

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £270.46 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Leaning towards evga for looks but the other 2 are silent.

i would go for the evga - active cooling, the other 2 are passive and rely on the case being well ventilated.
warranty for all 3 of them shouldnt be an issue (asus - as long as you buy from ocuk)

evga pros: active cooling, faster
evga cons: gonna be slightly noiser

others pros: silent
others cons: slower, rely on case ventilation, may throttle if too hot

Well that fan gpu will likely to be noisy, you could just get passive model, like my msi and strap a 8,10 or 12cm fan to it, and it'll be quieter. At idle now it's 33 degrees. Running passive

I don't game on it, so haven't tried it. But that fan looks 3 or 4cm, it's a low profile card, so once it spins to (if it spins that fast) to 2000 rpm, or 3000rpm it'll be loud

It's not speculating that small fans are loud, they will be louder, and less airflow than a larger one- for the same (or more) cfm and lower noise levels. Plus larger surface area of area. Something like

Nanoxia Deep Silence 92mm Ultra-Quiet PC Fan, 1400 RPM, 23.6 CFM, 13.7 dBA at 1400 RPM

Perfect card for older games, I would go with the EVGA.

That’s my thinking now thanks

I went for a passive MSI model.

Do want it quite silent but would imagine it would pump a bit heat into the case?

Random comment but just happened to spot this thread and noticed your username, we were both in the same quake 3 clan all those years ago I'm guessing. Think I stopped playing around 2004/5, everyone was playing threewave and I just got burnt out with it. Fun times for the most part though :)

What name did you go by?

Can’t remember when I give it up but don’t think it was too long after yourself

Just been talking with another ex clan member on a different thread! BuffetSlayer aka ScBPraetorian
Small world!

Demon. Ah right, yeah I remember Prae - he was in TD clan beforehand (with Dino, Oiley etc). Crazy to think it's been over a decade now, can't imagine I'd be much good at the game anymore either :)

I bought one of these for my lad.... we actually had destiny 2 running on it 60fps so im pretty sure it will be fine for older games :)

@ScBHavoK dude, actually having a look at what @hornetstinger said, if you don't mind frankensteining a gpu, getting a passive card and then tying a fan to it would actually give you better temps/performance.
passive heatsinks are generally bigger, so can handle more heat, and with a fan tied onto it, would give better performance than a bogstandard heatsink + fan

I'd pick passive for an HTPC since the video decoders in the cards won't get very hot, but for gaming passive will probably just cause the card to throttle more. It might be less important for a GT 1030 though, compared to the 1050 Ti models I was looking at.

Let's be real adding a nice quiet fan will add at least 10-20% to the price... Kinda defeats the point of a 1030 bieng cheapest possible thing. I'd always get a active cooler for gaming just incase the passive are designed for htpc builds and don't handle full load well. But who knows really only person who has one here doesn't game :')

I know time flies! i think it would be hard to get back in to it like, im gonna give qlive a go when i get sorted with gfx. I remember you being quite the player when i first was playing ;)

Thanks for that

Everything is on show in the case so want it to look decent

If it was for media playback then I would have agreed on the passive option. But for gaming I would be tempted to go for the active option.

I don't think both passive GPUs would look nice anyway with a fan strapped onto them :p.

I was better at moving around the maps than actually hitting anything ;)
