The VW UP Gti - What do we all think?

I personally can't see past the Fiesta ST in that price range for a car with performance. Had mine for a month and a half and I don't regret getting it for one second.

It's not really comparing like for like though is it? No arguments Fiesta ST is a good little car but it's hardly in the same price bracket. Up Gti starts at 13,750 ish but the starting point for the Fiesta is 16,595. Given Ford are generally more generous with the discounts it's still going to be more. I'd say the New Polo R-Line vs Fiesta ST would be a closer comparison.

You're right but for £13k you could pick up a couple of year old ST-3. I know what you mean, it would be interesting to see a Ka ST.

Beyond me why they have never done a Ka ST. Does it not share the same platform as the Fiat 500? And the Abarth goes well.

There's virtually always something older and better for similar money whatever you're buying, for someone in the Up GTIs price bracket who is buying new, there's not a vast amount of competition.

That was the old one, the current model is some kind of entry-level car originally intended for developing markets like India and Brazil.

Is that the Ka+ thing? I saw one a few weeks back and it didn't have the look of a car that had been designed for the European market. To be honest it didn't look like it had been designed within the past few decades. Not one of Ford's best efforts by a long stretch.

You're right. The Up GTi could do with a little more in my opinion though for the money.

It strikes me as a little bit cynical, as if they haven't really tried. I think it needed more power, more pace and some more differentiation. I have always liked the UP since the first time I drove the 75BHP one, it felt so much better than the other cars we drove that the same time in the class and I think they could have done something special with this but perhaps R is now the brand VW uses for it's quickest....which for me is sad.

The closest they got was the SportKa. 1.6 93hp. My SportKa is sub 10 seconds 0-60 apparently and does feel fast when I'm driving it, even though it really isn't. I guess the smaller the car the quicker it feels.
I do like it though. For the 4 miles to work and back on local a-roads its good fun. For anything further though.... Nope!

Oh and about £12.2k cheaper than the Up! :p

I like the idea of the Up GTi despite not being hugely impressed with the vanilla model. I am a convert to the idea of having just enough go to be able to exploit the cars potential whatever the conditions though ever since getting my MX5. For me even a remapped Mk1 Octavia vRS was more than I really needed on the road and that was only about 150 BHP/ton or to put it in modern c-segment hot hatch terms 'not much'.

I'll trade not having enough pull in top gear on the motor way for needing to wring its neck, use the revs and carry speed through corners every day of the week on a car that I actually want to enjoy driving.

Wonder if there will be a Mii Cupra or a Citigo VRS. :p

Sure I read somewhere that is not going to happen. For whatever reason the engine is being limited to VW this time. Shame really, imo the CitiGo is a better looking car styling wise, little less of the toothy grin than the Up, especially since the last little facelift.
