What card? Worth waiting?

So my 390x just died, which hurts as I was pretty happy with it at the moment.

So my options at the moment are £500 on a 1080. 2nd hand 980ti, seem hard to come by at a decent cost (some of them close to a 1070 new!). Or wait it out and use my 7870 until we hear news on the new Nvidia stuff?

But possibly miss out on the £500 ocuk deal at the moment.

Imho we are mid Feb, any new NV cards won't be in stock well into July as usual.
Your choice.

Ouch sorry to hear that. Card's death couldn't have come at a worse time (I don't even want to think about what I would do if my 290x die on me).

IMO just stick with your 7870 and hold it out for next gen. I know it's difficult, but it would be quite mad to jump onto a Nvidia card not this late in the cycle, especially when their newborn arrive and giving them all their love in the world (resource on performance optimisation), and kicking their older children (EOL cards) aside as they get pulled off the shelves with no more money can be made from them.

Depends how much you want to spend..

You could probably flog a dead 390x and actually get decent cash for it.

Right now if I had to get a card I'd jump on the RX 570 offer for £230 or the RX 580 for £300. It's still pricey, but you know that when new Nvidia cards come round the RX 570 will still be worth more or less what you've paid, so gives you the option if stock levels allow to sell up and move over.

But the RX 570/580 are still more or less only around similar performance as OP's dead 390x, with after 3 years and still have to spend up to £300 to get back the same performance (even if it is more power efficient) it's a tough pill to swallow I think.

It sure is but the saving grace is as I said the RX570/80 wouldn't lose any value over the space of 6 months unless Crypto vanishes so yes it's a lot of money but it's not money you're going to lose. If anything you'd turn a small profit.

It is a tough pill to swallow, I might just leave it until April and see whats what then. I had planned on upgrading the CPU in April anyway so I could just do the whole lot. I've got a few switch games to catch up on.

It just means no PUBG/Overwatch for a couple of months which isn't the worst thing in the world.

Nvidia should have something out this year,AMD might not bother, but who knows??

I would certainly just stick with the HD7870 for now. I remember getting the best RX470 4GB model for £160 in late 2016 and the pound was weaker too. The RAM cartel, mining and Nvidia and AMD not wanting to push each other too hard, means its a terrible time to buy a graphics card.

Just had a similar situation as my card died last weekend. Realised it couldn't have happened at a worse time and looking around at available cards and prices confirmed that. The offers this week were tempting but the fact that the NV cards are going to be last gen means I'm better waiting. Even second hand for anything from the last couple of gens are insane. Managed to pick up a gtx770 cheap in the end which I thought was a risk but it plays pubg fine at 1080. Your 7870 cannot be much worse after how NV treat their old cards via drivers so you may be surprised.

Not only last gen.....
My GTX1080 scores plummeted few months before the release of the 1080Ti. And expecting my Ti receiving the same treatment from Nvidia when the new cards are due out....

On contrary my FuryX got a huge perf boost (around 25%) between Jan 16 and Aug 17 (havent used since). Let alone the UEFI bios AMD released in April 2016 allowing overclocking to 1190, instead of the 1075 it could manage with the release bios from June 2015.

Honestly I'd wait it out, we're 4 weeks away from GDC which is where we'll get the announcement ( Titan X Maxwell and 1080 ) was launched at GDC and then GTC they talk about it more in depth. Wouldn't be surprised if they launch right at the end of March

Agree. I'll hold out, my whole PC needs a refresh so may aswell do it all at the same time now.
