Hey all,

Seems I actually need to look for a replacement card for my FuryX, happens more often lately that after a while, can be an hour or several, it start sounding louder. This is even if I am just browsing and not really doing anything heavy. And since the card is from 2015 no warranty on it any longer.

So, with that I am looking at this card. ASUS 1080Ti Turbo, what is your thoughts about it ?? I know there is better card then this, but I hesitated and missed out on the ones Gibbo was discounting during the week and with exchange rate it be way to expensive to buy from abroad so this card is really the only choice for me. :(

Well, there is this one as well, unless it been snagged up and their online shop not showing it (only 1 left it says now), which is Palit 1080Ti GameRock.

With these two options, which one would you go for ??

Really would appreciate any and all opinons on these cards, thank you !

Those cards are upto £200 overpriced due to "reasons" and Nvidia is also probably going to launch Ampere in the next few months.

If I were you,I would find a cheapo stop-gap card if the Fury X is failing. However,it sounds more like the the cooler has an issue. Have you tried cleaning the dust out of the cooler(with the fan not plugged in) and reapplied the thermal compound??

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated !

Well, over here those two cards are about £740, although a lot of cash still. I have cleaned it normally, not undoing the fan though, could try it.

Yes check the temps at idle and clean the fins and reapply thermal paste.
Andi.

And in regards to both of you, Thermal Paste ?? There was none with it and can't see how I can apply any, unless I would take apart the card itself ? I'm probably missing something, aint I ? :o

Edit: might still buy a card though. Even with Ampere close by, most likely wont buying until end of year, when the Ti comes out.

You will have to remove the existing heatsink but it will help cleaning the fins an the fan(s).
Can you get the temperatures?
Andi.

You have to undo the fan and clean the cooling fins - I have a mini-ITX rig and have to do it on the AIO cooler on my CPU,as dust gets trapped in it.

Regarding the thermal compound, the AIO water cooler on the Fury X will have thermal compound or a thermal pad attaching the cooler plate to the GPU. Sometimes,it can dry out,so replacing it with a fresh dollop of thermal compound or a new thermal pad might help. However, since the GPU chip is exposed unlike with modern CPUs you need to be more careful.

Here is a guide from a water block company:

Ahh the block at the fan, gotcha. Hmm got to check if I have any Thermal Paste at home though, or have to buy some first.

MSI Afterburner saying temps now is 33/34C which I think fairly average ??

Thanks for the link, will have a look at it. :)

Edit: Whopsi, you two talking about two different things, right ? andicole0 about the fan and heatsink, and CAT, you meaning taking apart the GPU and cleaning the inside ?? (Looking at the link it seems like it ?)

I technically said do both - clean the heatsink fins out,and also look at replacing the thermal pad or thermal paste. I would do the former first as it is easier and less fiddly. It might be enough TBH.

Ahh yes you did indeed. My apologizes. :o I went and looked at your link after posted the message and was like  when I realize it was referring to picking the GPU apart, my bad. :o

Got to wait though, have no thermal pound at home so better buy some before I taking the fan apart and doing it. Just to be on the safe side.

Try cleaning it all out first. Taking apart the card to reapply new thermal compound is a much bigger job,and you need more stuff and need to be VERY careful.

Usually its enough to clean out the heatsink fins. They are very thin so its easy to clog it up with dust. Also make sure when cleaning for the fan not to spin(potential back current).

If you’re not confident doing the thermal paste yourself (sorry if I’m making assumptions there) you could always take it to a reputable computer repair shop and see if they’ll do it for you.

Being that its the fury x could the noise not be coming from the pump? I take it that its a water cooled card?
