Fast family hatchback

Anything less than an RS3 or A45 is dangerously slow really, if you can't overtake 15 articulated lorries in 1/8th of a mile, why even bother?

Thing is on wet and bumpy British B roads, a 200-250hp car is about as quick as your going to go safely. You can have 100s of hp more but you won't be able to use it without ending up in a ditch.

Not really, 4WD hot hatches have no problem putting all the power down in the wet. You really have to drive them for a few weeks to appreciate how much traction is available when you go back to a high power FWD/RWD car it is an eye opener.

Yea but they aren't nearly as fun as a RWD car :D

Exploring the limits at "sensible" speeds is more entertaining than something that feels like it's on rails. You learn a lot more from it too.

test drive a M140/135 and a GTI and compare. Sure the BMW has more power, but they will both drive quite differently and one may give you more of a fizz and not feel like a compromise. Sure 300bhp can't be legally used on the roads all the time, but you dont need to floor it everywhere to have fun... Personally I'd prefer not to feel like I'm constantly wringing the neck out of an engine and have a quieter, lower revving motorway cruise, with power on tap for overtaking or get me out of a problem if needed. (not to mention rwd skids in the M car...)
Absolutely. I have tested a golf R and m140i in recent weeks and whilst the R is undoubtedly "better" (in terms of traction and usable performance) I'd pick the baby m in a heartbeat. Driving it made me smile more than any car I've driven whereas the golf was amazing yet dull in a strange way.
Try them both!
