I am trying to sort out some problems on someone's incredibly slow running PC. It runs XP, has an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 at 2.66 MHz, 4GB RAM and has a 500GB disk with about 170GB actually used.

Kaspersky says that a full scan that I am trying to run will take somewhere between 16 & 24 hours! Is this normal? CPU utilisation according to Task Manager is between 50% & 60%, mostly (but not entirely) on a single core; nothing else is reported as taking any significant CPU time.

Another question in relation to Kaspersky is that while running, it appears to be continually accessing the Internet; again is this normal behaviour?

As above it's likely a secondary cloud-based heuristic engine

With regards to the estimated time - lots of small files take a lot longer to scan than big files, especially on a hard drive rather than an SSD.
It's worth clearing browser cache/history, and doing a disk cleanup (temp files etc) to reduce the number of files to scan.
