Hopfully a simple one...RX580 or GTX1070

Hi All,

Taking into account the current costs, desire to not have to upgrade again anytime soon and that is going onto a Ryzen 1600 based machine would you go for GTX1070 or RX580?

Seems I can get a 1070 for about £525 or the RX580 for £450.

Looking at benchmark tests they would suggest the 1070 is better but with the RX580 supporting DX12 might it be the better option over the longer term?

Is there another model I should consider other than these two?

Any help to clarify my thoughts would be great.

Thanks.

If you can afford a 1070 do it - you'll get the performance here and now and if down the road and that is very much an if things change with DX12 GPUs by that point both GPUs will be long in the tooth and less than ideal.

That said if you are spending a good slice of money now, unless you are in a hurry to upgrade, it might be worth waiting to see what comes up with new GPUs due.

Thanks for the thoughts. What do you mean about the "if things change with DX12" is there a general issue with them? Is it not future proofing as I think it is?

DX12 uptake has been slow - we are probably a long way off the point where games are properly exploiting the potential of DX12 which might (maybe) show a significant difference between the cards. Especially as AMD seems to be focusing on other areas right now I think it is a massive long short in any decision making process.

£500+ for a 1070 is beyond nuts. I'd wait for the new cards personally

Yeah - most of the ones that are actually in stock and available are priced at almost twice what I paid for mine. Granted I grabbed mine on one of Gibbo's specials a bit below normal price.

Annoyingly waiting isn't an option, my PC has been around for over a decade with various upgrades over time.
It is on its last legs and will be replaced within the week.
I just dont know what to do about gfx. I agree the costs is crazy, especially the 1070. I just dont know if the performance gain is worth the increased cost.
Add to it that I am upgrading from a Q9650 CPU/6GB RAM with HD7950 I expect to see major improvements with either, am I right to think that?

Thanks,

Yes but my point is, with a new release imminent then it makes sense to use your old card for a bit longer. Dime bar.
Fully agree, a sensible and rational person would wait. I am not one of those people in this case, want a new PC this week really.
Take away the fact that better is round the corner, should i expect to see a decent GFX bump from the 580, given I am going from super old system with the 7950?

ARGGHHH, I hate making a decision. Just noticed that the 1060 is around the same price, post voucher code, as the 580. Which to go for? the 10606GB is surely slower than the 580?

The 7950 is way cheaper and older!
The 7950 is still no slouch at 1080p, and I say that as someone who just spent more than I ever expected to pay for a video card on a 1070. My benchmarks pretty much doubled, and VR feels more fluid. But in your shoes I'd upgrade the core system and sit on that GPU for a while longer. You'll get two lots of upgrade satisfaction then, and probably save money.

[Edit: so much for editing the original! Sigh.]
