I've had an offer for my vega card and it's too good to turn down. The buyer wants me to use paypal invoice to bill him. I've never used it before and want to know if it's a scam or if not, is it safe to use? I did stick the card on gumtree to see if I'd get any interest and he is a miner from London looking another amd card.

Are there any known scams with paypal invoics?

Do I get the money for the card when he pays or does paypal hold the money for any length of time first?

Any help, I would be grateful for feedback.

I've used Paypal for years and never had a problem. In fact I used it today to pay for a hand held torch I wanted on Amazon. The thing with Paypal is once you've set it up it makes buying online a doddle. It's safer than going to a website and handing over your bank details as you can never be certain that those details won't be used to take money from your account illegally.

Dunno if they still do it but Paypal used to (somewhat randomly) hold big purchases for a period of time on a new account if you've not had some transactions before. No idea if they still do though.

Recently sold my R9 Nano that way for a fair price and to avoid ebay fees and worked fine, sent invoice to buyer for amount, and when payed, it was instantly in my account. Not sure if that may be as I have used Paypal for a fair bit and make a number of small transactions a month though.

I did add few details like logging serial number on the invoice and uploading few pics where possible of date and time with something like Haven showing a load on the card, serial tags etc. Buyer was also someone who had a solid reputation on ebay which is how I came across them.

EDIT: Does seem it could apply to invoices also looking around if you don't meed certain criteria: https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/fundsavailability

Cheers for that. That's my big fear. I use paypal weekly so no issues there but I've not sold much with it, not via ebay either so I'm just worried it'll hold for the 21days. I can't be without my cash for 21 days. I'll need to get a new GPU

Yup, don't do it. There's a very good reason the offer is too good to refuse because he intends to scam you and wants you to go along with it. He just needs to tell PayPal you sent him an empty box and there's nothing you can do to prove otherwise and PayPal will refund him straight from your bank.

What is wrong with a bank transfer? I mean just the fact he wants to do something different raises a question of why? I mean that would be simply my immediate response to him - why do you want to do that/why can't you just make a bank transfer?

I was considering using it for a gumtree sale, I thought there was a commision,
and also as earlier link shows funds are not available for 21days ...
I would say don't do it.

You have to be especially careful selling components because you're taking the chance they don't know what they're doing. Personally I would only ever sell such items locally for cash or on the member's market here.

Yeah I think I'll decline the offer. I did advertise it for a high amount to test the water and he wanted it hence my interest in selling it to him and getting a lesser card. Ah well we'll move on.

It was too good to turn down as it was advertised for more than what I paid new for it in October. Not that he offered me the money, it was what I had advertised it for. Moot point anyway as I've emailed him to decline the offer.
